  1. “I also can’t do the kindle thing. I spend enough time at a screen I like the feel and smell of a book in my hands.”

    THL, I love books and will keep buying them (though $10 for a paperback seems high), but I’m about to go Kindle. Just saw what you can do with the New York Times on the Kindle – including your own My Clippings folder(s) – and I gotta say I’m tired of the Times and Times’ clippings cluttering up my apartment. It’s also nice for travel – you can take up to 1,500 books with you at any given time since you never know what you’ll be in the mood to read on the beach.

  2. “ENY: you provided links to news stories of negligent parents wherein the kid starved. I think that is a far cry from starvation due to economic distress.”

    Benson, if you take a closer look into those stories, several of the people involved were in distressed circumstances, which undoubtedly contributed to the outcome. You’re a good guy, but I think you’re dead wrong on this. There are people who starve in America.

  3. biff, indeed, why they chose kate smith’s “god bless america” over “America the Beautiful” at the 7th inning stretch is beyond me.

    did anyone see the usopen where david archuletta sang america the beautiful? He changed the words. Why oh why do entertainers feel the need to personalize a perfectly wonderful song.

    Guess I got my rotd in.

  4. M4L;

    Well if that is what you want, then perhaps you talk to people who make statements like:

    “There seems to be some consensus of opinion in much of this country, not just here on this site, that there are vast amounts of poor people lazily partying hardy on our dime”

    Where did anyone on this site make that statement?
