Those curious about the rich interiors behind the facades of some of New York’s many houses of worship will have a chance to glimpse them during the 16th annual Sacred Sites Open House weekend this month.

The annual celebration of architecture organized by the New York Landmark Conservancy promotes open houses, tours, performances, and special programs across the state on Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17. The online calendar shows that more than 100 sites will be open for the weekend.

While you can get outside the borough and check out houses of worship all over the state, closer to home four Brooklyn churches and one cemetery are participating. Sacred Heart Church in the Mary of Nazareth Parish in Fort Greene is offering guided tours of the 1870s Gothic Revival sanctuary. Others are offering self-guided tours, including Old First Reformed Church in Park Slope and St. Ann’s in Brooklyn Heights. Also in Brooklyn Heights, Grace Church will have self-guided tours, organ demonstrations, and an organ recital.

Joining in this year is Green-Wood Cemetery with a short trolley tour, an art installation in the chapel, and a panel discussion. The talk will take place in the restored Weir greenhouse in the newly opened visitors center.

Registration is required for pre-booked programs and those can fill up quickly. The days, hours, and registration requirements for the free programs vary with each location; check the online calendar for more details.
