Rental of the Day: 80 Dekalb Studio
All the units, except for the penthouses, are rented out at 80 Dekalb. But the Brownstoner Marketplace has a studio rental by owner if you’re kicking yourself for missing the boat. Obviously everything’s pretty new and shiny, and this unit is way up on the 35th floor. We’ll also say this looks much more spacious…

Obviously everything’s pretty new and shiny, and this unit is way up on the 35th floor. We’ll also say this looks much more spacious than your average studio. But the rent goes for $2,130 a month, sans broker fee, and it’s only for ten months with option to renew. Sounds like someone got transferred right after renting this place!

** An apartment that is in a better location, but is both very small and way above my price range… involving a quicker commute to work, but I’m spending almost all of my money on my apartment so I can’t really go out very much, and spending time at home feels really claustrophobic.
also, don’t forget most of these bldgs gave buttloads of free months rent concessions. then factor in the fact that you have:
a) a functional kitchen in which you can cook a decent meal and not order take out constantly
b) free laundry
c) free gym
NYGuy7 — Closer and bigger… fine. But there are limits. Ya know, limits like having a job that pays $85,000 a year and you’re still spending a HUGE portion of your wages for the luxury of living in a TINY little box?
I don’t give a shit about the supply side of the equation. An owner will try to get as much money as the “market can bear.” It’s the demand side that is seriously sick.
“But, a *normal* person is presented with the following choice”
Agree with you that this place is expensive for what it is, but these kind of arguments are daft. Either there are a lot of *abnormal* people out there or most the residential buildings in Manhattan and close in BK would be empty.
Also a 1 hr each way commute is hardly excessive, unless one works odd hours.
Imagine, the prices of rentals getting more and more expensive the closer you are to Manhattan. What’s next, paying even more rent for larger spaces?
tybur6, 104M. drawing tonight. just doing my usual svc announcement. if you hit and buy 2 family, hook me up on the rental man
Funny Rob… my situation is that my landlord (co-op apartment owner that I’m subletting from) didn’t try to charge me $400 more a month just cuz. She probably could have found a tenant at that price, but she seems to be blissfully ignorant of the market.
And the reason she could have found a tenant at that price is because the market is full of people like DH that think $2,300 for tiny box is perfectly acceptable.

i bet your mom does your laundry and cooks for you as well!!! score! hahah

@tybur6: If DH is rolling in it he/she wouldn’t have a roommate. But I like your post, normal folk (and I’m one of them) really only have those two options.
No, DH — that’s not why it’s retarded. I don’t know what you earn… apparently quite a bit and, because you have lots of cash, you don’t spend a lot of time at home. But, a *normal* person is presented with the following choice:
** An apartment I can afford and it’s a decent size, but it involves 2+ hrs on the subway per day and it’s not especially close to certain amenities I enjoy.
** An apartment that is in a better location, but is both very small and way above my price range… involving a quicker commute to work, but I’m spending almost all of my money on my apartment so I can’t really go out very much, and spending time at home feels really claustrophobic.

If the differences were “a couple hundred bucks” I’d almost agree with you. But the differences are more like $500 or $1000.
