The Daily News had an article on a group of tenants who live in 294 Fifth Avenue in the Slope and say conditions in the rent-controlled building have deteriorated since the property went into foreclosure a couple years ago and a receiver was appointed to take care of it. The building’s boiler, for example, didn’t work for three weeks this winter, and the front-door lock is broken. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio held a news conference yesterday to support the tenants in seeking a court order that would force the receiver to make repairs. According to the article: “The slumlike conditions at 294 Fifth Ave. spotlight a growing concern: smaller apartment buildings that fall into disrepair in part because the building is overleveraged. ‘We think this is a growing problem around the city that the banks and lenders are not taking responsibility for,’ said de Blasio.”

Sorry the three kids thing, Sometimes life just happens no matter the planning, like when your husband splits after twelve years and 3 kids and your college degree can’t get you a salary enough to cover rent and child care; or when your wife dies from breast cancer and you have exhausted all your funds on alternative medical treatments when the traditional failed and the insurance companies won’t cover you. Now you and your 3 kids have to figure it out on your own.
Shit happens fast and unforeseen.

I think you are a bit confused. I am not advocating people getting thrown onto the streets at childhood to make it own their own bootstraps and rise to the top of some multi-national co. I am saying people should be realistic about their lives and expectations; That family and friends should be your crutch when needed not the gov. Maybe make some sacrifices when needed. That in the worst of cases, for the few that truly need it and have no family, help should be provided by charitable organizations, not the gov. and not in epidemic proportions as it is now.
But to answer your question, I have been on my own since I was a teen. I am now in my 30’s. I didn’t have children because well, I couldn’t afford it. I put myself through school between jobs later in life, I have worked shit jobs, lived in shitholes and I am just now starting to squirrel some money away. I have gone days without eating and have come very close to being homeless a few times. But you know what, I keep at it. I go to work every day. I lace up my worn out boots, I walk to work and today was better than yesterday and yesterday was better than the day before. And I’ll make damn sure my children don’t go through the same shit. So, yeah, I think I could manage.
