The Daily News had an article on a group of tenants who live in 294 Fifth Avenue in the Slope and say conditions in the rent-controlled building have deteriorated since the property went into foreclosure a couple years ago and a receiver was appointed to take care of it. The building’s boiler, for example, didn’t work for three weeks this winter, and the front-door lock is broken. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio held a news conference yesterday to support the tenants in seeking a court order that would force the receiver to make repairs. According to the article: “The slumlike conditions at 294 Fifth Ave. spotlight a growing concern: smaller apartment buildings that fall into disrepair in part because the building is overleveraged. ‘We think this is a growing problem around the city that the banks and lenders are not taking responsibility for,’ said de Blasio.”

  1. “But fwiw, flowerpots on fire escapes are illegal.”

Yes but I hardly think it is the LL who put them there (in 1990) – even if the headline grabbing violation count is entirely the LLs responsibility.

  2. dibs- I haven’t said anything other than generalizing that RC threads get people upset. But again, as others have pointed out, none of us knows the whole situation, But fwiw, flowerpots on fire escapes are illegal.

It’s good of fsrg to have looked this up but it still doesn’t take away responsibility from the bank -or landlord- to not follow the law.

  3. DIBS – please don’t mischaracterize what I posted – I am sure this women is a PITA of the highest order BUT unfortunatly there are thousands of similar tenants – many who dont pay the rent they owe (in fact complaining helps them get away with not paying)
we dont need a 120 post Brownstoner thread to discuss this (at least not on these facts) – btw there are LL that dont ever make a repair and try to suck as much $ out of a building as they can – tenants be damned.

The issue worthy of pointing out here is what a hack diblasio is – and how these facts just highlight it (almost as much as him using his wife to say “he gets it” in his campaign literature]

  4. “We hardly stay in hidden recesses. How considering MM’s columns and posts are a daily event, that has got to be one of the funnier things you’ve ever said. Not logical, but funny.”

    That’s true.
I just liked the imagery of you and MM plotting in some isolated corner of the blog, behind the Forum posts or the Directory listings.
I also pictured you both wearing CatWoman suits.

  5. bxgrl,
I took offence to your “foaming about the mouth” comment because it implies all of us are cold hearted nasties. Yet no one on this blog knows the whole story(since when does any NY rag or Pol tell whole story).

As for making it nasty and personal, I just tossed the grenade back as you often disapprove of others for making it personal.

  6. “I got that email at 10:30, but I guess they hit the upper class first.”

Most likely because I use my office zip for shipping and not my home ghetto zip otherwise I’d probably never have gotten the notice.
