The Daily News had an article on a group of tenants who live in 294 Fifth Avenue in the Slope and say conditions in the rent-controlled building have deteriorated since the property went into foreclosure a couple years ago and a receiver was appointed to take care of it. The building’s boiler, for example, didn’t work for three weeks this winter, and the front-door lock is broken. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio held a news conference yesterday to support the tenants in seeking a court order that would force the receiver to make repairs. According to the article: “The slumlike conditions at 294 Fifth Ave. spotlight a growing concern: smaller apartment buildings that fall into disrepair in part because the building is overleveraged. ‘We think this is a growing problem around the city that the banks and lenders are not taking responsibility for,’ said de Blasio.”

The guy behind the person holding the sign looks like he has no idea why he is there. Probably is a friend of a friend who was asked to come in and just go with the flow.
I want to know why the sign isn’t writen in English.
If i moved to mexico and felt I was entitled to their welfare system I damn well would print my signs in Spanish.
I can’t read spanish… are we sure these people aren’t just lining up for a lunch special at the sushi restaurant?
You just can’t get that sort of diversity in the ‘burbs unfortunately.

And as you, Montrose, say we pass judgment on them, you do so to us. You say “they” are in the minority, I say as someone who has managed 30+ buildings in Brooklyn, “they” are not. You statements are based only on your ignorance.
Little know fact- A tenant, when faced with a non-pay eviction, can show cause to have that eviction stayed. And can continue to do so for months. How do you show cause? By stacking up HPD complaints. No building is perfect. If HPD comes out, they WILL find “something” and write-up the owner. I’m not saying that is what she is doing, but it is a well known tactic used in the overly tenant favorable court system.
I challenge anyone here to go sit in Brooklyn landlord tenant court for a day and then return for a debate.

Sorry the three kids thing, Sometimes life just happens no matter the planning, like when your husband splits after twelve years and 3 kids and your college degree can’t get you a salary enough to cover rent and child care; or when your wife dies from breast cancer and you have exhausted all your funds on alternative medical treatments when the traditional failed and the insurance companies won’t cover you. Now you and your 3 kids have to figure it out on your own.
that’s what orphanages are for. and most people in these situations, the fathers were never around the begin with. they didnt just pick up and leave after 12 years.. that’s more of an upper middle class people family scenario.
