Ivy Encroaching
The owners of the home with the ivy are responsible for cutting it back. When it reaches your side, don’t hesitate to cut it. They probably don’t realize how much it has grown in the summer heat. It will be a moot point if they complain because you will have already cut it 🙂

We just bought a house in Brooklyn Heights (which was a House of the Day a while back…) which neighbors a brick apartment building. The apartment building’s ivy is coming has grown to about 3-4 feet deep (maybe it isn’t ivy, maybe it is some other type of vine.) We like the ivy, but at some point, it will start to invade our house and our power lines go right through the middle of it. The apartment building is several stories higher than our place.
So, my questions are: 1) do we even need to be concerned. It seems like the power lines and the roof might be an issue, but so far the plant has not gotten hold of the exterior of our house and 2) Who is responsible for trimming it back? I wouldn’t mind doing it except that the apartment building is so much higher than our house that it seems like you would need some special machinery and also I’m worried about those power lines.
Any advice?

Although it could be cable for exterior lighting, most likely what you refer to as power lines are phone and cable wires. Is the adjacent building’s ivy growing up their walls? If so, it’s apt to be very detrimental to the brick and mortar and should be relegated to garden use only. You should talk to the building owner or board.
We just finished having removed an ivy-like vine from the whole side of a builidng that abouts a community garden. We’re still scoping and pricing the brick repair and it’s going to be expensive…..

I’ve had to have repointing of masonry & replacement of windows & installation of new parapet because of ivy & creeper vines. Â I’ve repeatedly asked neighbors to trim it back & some have done so – only right since they’re the same people who reported my walls as ‘hazardous’ when the bricks were loose because of the vines. Â Other neighbors have not responded & I’ve trimmed as far down from the roof as I can reach & have just sprayed the vines w/ Round-Up. Â I hated doing it but, really, it has cost me upwards of twenty thousands of dollars to repair the damage. Â If I were you I’d leap right on it immediately.

round up is a good idea if talking doesn’t work. We were watching neighbors vines creeping over and then they just cut them all back, which was a nice surprise.

My ivy is creeping onto my neighbor’s brick and I am going to go out there soon and cut it back.   I should probably pull if off my wall as well; as much as I like it, it will ruin the mortar joints on the brick.
