We just had a horrible experience using Kolbe on a job.  The entire order was messed up by every middleman involved (and there are many when you use Kolbe), and after interminable delays, we had multiple windows arrive cracked, and others off by 10″ or more in size.  And then the ensuing finger pointing. Never again!

I’ve never seen or heard of Kolbe. I’ve seen the Trimline wood windows, and they are very clunky. I’d go with aluminum before Trimline wood. Anderson, Pella, and Marvins are wood windows that look better, but they’re very costly. Inspect the product in person before you buy.

For wood exteriors, we were advised to use oil primer and latex/acrylic paint as this allows the wood to breathe. We used BM low luster and it’s held up well.

Also consider ductless Split Air conditioners. I’m trying to get coop board approval to get one installed. They have ones that can also provide heat.

You may wish to find another supplier:  Ben Moore makes an exterior oil called Super Spec in low lustre.  We use this product on brownstone doors and our customers are pleased.  When we use this product we generally ad penetrol to it to help it level a little.  It will look sharp.

If you wish to go real high end, Janovic carries a dutch paint that is made for exterior doors.  I cannot remember the name off hand – but I do remember the price – about $120 for a can just shy of a US gallon.  Good product though.

Janovic sells Fine Paints of Europe.  The Hollandlac Satin is probably the best paint in the world and priced accordingly!!!  I think they have test cans..

I used Alain Lebel, master craftsman and dedicated window restorer. He splits his time between a workshop in Canada and projects in NYC. What kind of blinds you get – custom-ordered, online/mail order, or Home Depot – might depend a lot on difficulty of installation.  Any of the online or mail-order blinds should be fine if you are careful with measuring and handy with power tools *and* have an older place with masonry walls.  You’ll save a bundle if you do it yourself.  However, many – make that most – of the condos today are built with concrete in the outer walls.  Even if you’re doing an inside mount for the blinds, you may be drilling into solid concrete and have a rough time of it getting level, properly mounted blinds.  If you feel like you are in over your head at that point you will find it hard to get an experienced installer to do installation alone for you separate from product sale, at least at a price that doesn’t make you very unhappy.

So if you for any reason think you could have difficult installation, and want to keep a lower price point, your next best bet is Home Depot which provides installation services with purchases.  Selection and finish choices there are limited compared to a custom shop, as you’d expect, and the blinds are quite serviceable though likely not envy-inducing once they’re up.  They offer both real and faux-wood blinds, and each has different merits, so try to do some research for which will suit you best.

You may need custom if it’s not an option to saw down reasonably-close-to-fitting standard size blinds on each end to fit (not too hard, if sawed reasonably neatly, since the ends of the blind slats aren’t visible at all for an inside mount, and even for an outside mount most slight saw variations would only be noticeable when the blinds are raised and stacked.)

For lower end wood or aluminum/vinyl blinds, use Home Depot – a custom blinds place won’t match their price for product plus installation. (I believe Lowes doesn’t offer installation services in Brooklyn.) If you want anything higher end, or color matching to a woodstain, or anticipate any trickiness in the measuring or install, you’ll be best off paying the price upfront for custom.

I totally disagree with the above poster. Definitely worth it to get the windows serviced, rather than replaced. Old wood windows can be made nearly as efficient as new double-pane windows, if not equal or better. Caulking, weather-stripping, and storms are the key. Sorry I don’t have a specific person to recommend.

If you have single pane sash windows with iron weights, you are better off replacing them with modern thermal double pane windows. the box that the weights move back and forth in is often one of the biggest thermal losses in a unit, not to mention the single pane. I have restored this type of window before in my own place once, it was effort in the wrong direction. The labor cost to put in a new window might be the same as what you are contemplating. just my 2 cents.
