Young, Up and Starting Architect

Hello All,
I am looking for a young architect looking to sink their number 2 pencils in a major renovation in Park Slope Brooklyn. We are adding an addition to the roof, as well as renovating our floor with new kitchen, bathroom, custom closets, ect. I am looking for someone who is creative and would like to get their work out there with different design and architectural magazines. This would be OUR show piece. 5thave, my advice to you is to look at any architecture firm that has managed to complete work over the past few years in this difficult economy. Then find someone whose work you can see (in person).  Of those, find the person whom you trust the most.  Look at recommendations and a track record of satisfied clients, and listen to your gut.  You don’t want to be stuck with someone who is going to abuse the privilege of designing your space.  You’ll want someone who can gently and persuasively make a case for their design choices, but who will listen to you and implement your concerns – it will be your place after all. Finally, you’ll want someone who knows the easy way to do things.  Otherwise, you’ll be stuck doing things the hard way.

That’s a laudable invitation, and you’ve gotten an (anticipatable) robust response.  Might you also want to talk to someone with real experience in your kind of renovation?  I agree that it would be exciting to take a journey of discovery with a youthful architect, but I can also assume that you’re trying to control costs.  A little more time and money spent with the architect can save HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars in construction costs. I’d urge you to look for both creative and experienced – you’ll save a lot of headache.

i just used an amazing architect (actually a wonderful couple) to renovate the back half of my house (kitchen, hall, bathroom).

they are right here in my neighborhood (carroll gardens) which made it great for meetings and site visits during construction! They were really great to work with, had great ideas and interesting material suggestions, and helped us keep everything on budget. Every detail was thoughtfully considered. The drawings were great and supervising our crew was invaluable.  And it came out fantastic!
