We received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.
Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.
Sure, it plays a role, but I don’t see how it can be prevented.
Were you ever a teenager? Teenagers like to congregate!
good lord, other than some idiot posters, who is saying that they were fighting *about* chicken wings? not the cops, and not brownstoner. but a couple others seem to be saying that we should expect shootings and stabbings anytime there’s a school holiday, and i just am not getting that from this story, nor does it make logical sense. arguments don’t tend to work when you try to ignore the facts!
put simply, NO – it’s not typical that there would be thousands of teenagers (black, chinese, hasidic or otherwise) in this mall, even if all other circumstances were the same. for an incident of this magnitude, it seems to require an atmosphere where kids are looking to entertain themselves (as opposed to, say, taking a test), little to no supervision, and most importantly *LOTS* of kids. the latter really only seems to arrive when there’s a special event of some kind, and to pretend that’s not a part of this is idiotic. yeah, fights will happen here or there whenever you have 20 teenagers gathered together, but three shootings and a stabbing? are you seriously trying to argue that a huge crowd doesn’t play a role?
One of the most surprising things about all of this is learning that Brooklyn’s wing special is 8 TIMES more expensive than Cleveland’s wing special. 5 cents versus 40 cents. Damn.
“But wasder, not that I’m a big fan of Atlantic Mall (NOT!), but what are they to do? If they refuse to admit teens, the teens will spill out to the street.”
RF–I hear you . Wasn’t trying to pin it on cops or Atlantic Center so much as dispute the notion that this incident is a reflection of Fort Greene.
quote:
Quelle horreur
lol. did you really just say that?
*rob*
Minard, the police have already said that this was a group of teen agers from all over the borough and none of the shooters was from the area. This has very little to do with FG and alot to do with the Atlantic Center Mall and the lack of security that apparently prevailed there.

It’s like the Target problem: it’s always out of stock of many items because it sells so much stuff that they can’t keep enough of it around.
It’s very inconvenient that all the entrances to Atlantic Mall on the weekend are on the Flatbush-Atlantic side, but I am sure the people who live between Hanson Place and Fulton St. are glad.
There’s no way to prevent teens from wanting to congregate. And it’s unrealistic to think that they won’t congregate in a public place from 6-8 on a balmy November night when there’s no school the next day. I’m sure the new bookstore will not like it if the teens pick their place as the next meet-and-greet stop!
I confess to letting my 13.5-yr-old meet friends around there. (the Guitar Center! Quelle horreur!) We’ll have to have a talk about marauding bands of teens.
Grandpa’s quote was priceless. Should be Quote of the Day.
“It is a fantasy to think that the poverty and crime that have plagued areas like Fort Greene and Clinton Hill for decades have vanished because house prices are now so high that they are unaffordable to middle class families.”
