fulton-map-1109.jpgWe received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.

Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.

  1. RF, the way i hear it they keep the shelves less stocked in that Target to control inventory. Not creating demand but being able to track what is stolen vs bought. We have all heard that Target is #1 in sales per SF, but i have also heard its #1 in employee and outside theft.

I’d be interested in knowing where you heard this, and with what degree of credibility.

Seems pretty stupid not to have the inventory so they can’t sell it. Why bother to have a store?

  2. Every New Year’s eve hundreds of thousands of people, including teens gather in Times Square. There has been very little trouble over the years. So crowd size really isn’t what caused the problem. It’s a combination of things, like a perfect storm. But if I were Bw3, I would can the .40 wing night. And the mall should be paying for upping the security. NYPD shouldn’t have to police a mob of kids for a chicken wing promotion for a private business. What’s Bw3’s responsibility in all this?

Well, yeah, there are thousands of cops getting double-time-and-a-half overtime, and they search them all, throw away all the bottles and other forms of alcohol or weapons, and put them in little corrals just like cattle in the slaughterhouse, starting at 6 p.m. I don’t think that works for a spontaneous gathering of teens on a balmy November night in Ft. Greene/Atlantic Mall.

Are you serious? They are a restaurant. They had a sale. It attracted a lot of customers.

There do not seem to be any reports of problems inside the restaurant.

I can’t see that they have any responsibility.

If the city asks them to suspend the promotion, then that is a different situation (e.g., if they do not comply and there are further problems).

  5. Clearing up a few things. 1) The Cleveland 5 cent Bw3 days were back in the early 90s. Its been a while since I lived there. 2) There have always cops at that Bw3 on tuesday (every tuesday is 40 cent night) nights when i have been there in or around the restaraubt and the fights I have seen are always in the store. 3) If it was a 40 cent brie night, i doubt there would be a similar crowd, so yes the chicken wing special has something to do with bringing this type of crowd together. 4) The implication that the shooting was about wings is silly, no one is implying that. 5) The Cleveland Hts PD were the ones who shut down the 5 cent wing night, according to a friend who was a Captain. The PD asked them to stop running the special due to the violence that ensued in the place and around it.

  7. I disagree, are you speaking to my post? If so, I invite you to read it again, and carefully. What I said was that teens who are up to no good will do what they will regardless of a wing special. I never said or meant to imply that we should expect stabbings and a shooting from the mere fact that teens have congregated. However it is to be expected from, as I said, teens who are up to no good. A large crowd of teens is nothing but that, a large crowd of teens. On the other hand, a large crowd of teens who are up to no good and looking for trouble will bring/create trouble. Would they have been there without the wings? Yep. When I go to the AC Mall during the day when there is no school it is PACKED with wall to wall kids. They hang out in the Target food court area, the Game Stop and Guitar Center. They spill out all over that mall. And guess what, they do it on days when the wing special isn’t running!

  8. I wouldn’t speculate too much or comment on (naive)gentrification or who did or now lives in Ft Greene, Brooklyn, wherever.
This kind of stupid violence can and does happen wherever teens congregate whether Atlantic Mall, E86th Manhattan,
    suburban HS sports games, etc.
Point is guns are too available and certain special interests are able to stop any effort to make laws/distribution more difficult.
