fulton-map-1109.jpgWe received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.

Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.

  1. notwithstanding the folks who plunk down a million dollars for houses here and there, Brooklyn is still a pretty poor place outside ritzy neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope. It is a fantasy to think that the poverty and crime that have plagued areas like Fort Greene and Clinton Hill for decades have vanished because house prices are now so high that they are unaffordable to middle class families. It is as if we are reverting to the city Jacob Riis describes in “Daylight and Shadow”. A place only for the rich and the poor.

  2. Over the weekend, there were thousands of scary teenagers, many black, roaming FG. I guess they weren’t randomly roaming, they were actually in the hood to take the specialized high school test at Tech.

A question for ya. How do you differentiate the weekend test taking crowd from Tuesdays crowd? 13-15.. mostly black… packs of males… similarly attired…

    LOL, Colonel Steve Austin.

My daughter took the test at Stuy because she goes to middle school in Manhattan. I could say the same about roaming gangs of Chinese teens! And you should have seen how many were surging across West St. to the Warren St. Barnes & Noble afterward [waiting for their parents].

best rule of thumb is to avoid ANY large group of teenagers (regardless of race.. always have to add that for fear of being labeled a racist i guess), doesnt matter if they are going to take a test or up to something bad. you see a large group of teenagers, you cross the street!

    *rob*

  4. i disagree is right. The conspiracy/NYPD idea is a big stretch.

douche31- Col. Austin made a great point. Maybe in NYC and Cleveland, because of the demographics, but in other areas with a different demographic? Just the same- it isn’t a “Black” problem, it’s a societal problem.

  6. I’ve been to BW3 numerous times on .40 wing night (hey, I’ve got cheap, hungry friends!) and I’ve never seen a fight. But, I suppose that’s neither here nor there. Teens up to no good and prone to fighting have never needed cheap chicken parts as an excuse to start a melee. I find it to be rather idiotic to blame this on some damn chicken. I’ll say it again…teens up to no good and prone to fighting don’t need cheap chicken parts as an excuse to start a melee. Would anyone really say that if all circumstances were the same (half school day/no school the next day/nice weather for Novemeber) save the .40 wings, this would not have happened? NO!

  7. oh, yay, more conspiracy theories. what would be the point of nefariously putting “too much emphasis” on the hot wings promotion? if anything, wouldn’t it be in the PD’s interest to say they had no idea why there were so many kids there and no forewarning that there would be? assuming that the police captain is telling the truth – that there were *thousands* of kids there – you have to be kidding me to suggest that to offer an explanation of why is somehow racist.

beyond that, i’m not sure what CSA’s point is – that we should all be afraid that this kind of violence is going to break out anytime there’s a day off from school? that we shouldn’t be comforted by an explanation of why there were so many teenagers in one place at one time?
