We received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.
Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.
when i used to take the 125th st station i had my bag checked THREE times :-/
THREE TIMES!
do i even look like a terrorist!?!
honestly tho, i have no problems with bag searches and stuff, as long as the police arent allowed to really do anything to you because of what they find, unless it’s a gun. tho i firmly believe that if i wanted to carry a gun i should be allowed. not that i would cuz id probably pull a plaxico on myself or something
*rob*
I think the subway searches are so bogus and a waste of time and money. I don’t believe they are a deterrent whatsoever given one has the right to refuse to be searched and all one has to do when refusing is leave the subway station. So they then just wait or go to another station to blow it up or gas it or whatever.
no father figures and lack of positive role models
nothing constructive to do after school
no incentive to better oneself
the individual does control #2 & 3, fwiw…
I noticed there were large groups of teens roaming the hanson/fulton are earlier in the evening when I got off the subway, it seemed a little strange. Heard the gunshots during dinner and saw large group of teens all dressed in black run down s elliot and then up hanson towards flatbush.
Went outside and neighbors saw the large group of kids and saw them pull the gun. Maybe something gang related.. best part is a cruiser drove by as the group of teens ran down hanson. It should have seemed a little suspicious to them to see 11 kids all dressed in black running down the street.. you think?
“What gives the police the right to stop and search somebody?”
The law?
I’ve had my bag searched on the subway about dozen times. It goes on every day at the bigger subway stops.
“If this can happen there what hope is there for farther east on Fulton which doesn’t have all the foot traffic.”
Not sure there is a correlation to be drawn on this particular point Delepp. Lots of times shootings happen in very well attended places specifically because there are so many people milling about. All the more chance that two people with beef with each other will encounter one another. Shootings in less trafficked areas tend to be of the more intimate nature.
Nonetheless there is no getting around the fact that this is an awful thing and that is now the second shooting along that stretch of Fulton in the last year (with the hideous execution in the hair salon last year). Don’t think it means that gentrification isn’t happening as much as this continues to be a neighborhood with a large number of uncontrolled firearms floating around and that really sucks.
Damned Buffalo wings.
BBB..it’s been a standard practice for some time now.
“What conditions would allow an officer to do that?” Ummmm, maybe things like this shooting????
You should read the statistics on what the stop & search has been able to accomplish. They were published a s a link on here a few weeks ago if I remember.
This isn’t Oz, BBB.
stop and searches? What gives the police the right to stop and search somebody? What conditions would allow an officer to do that?
