Associated took over the two storefronts next door, the old Beso restaurant space and the late, lamented Donuts coffee shop, for its expansion. A new awning was being installed on the building yesterday morning.

YES!! I didn’t know who to ask here about pages refreshing but not updating comments or showing new stories. Maybe it’s a problem with the server, but then I noticed that if and when it finally updates, comments that others have posted over the “blackout” period show up. Interesting to know it’s not just me and I’m taking comfort knowing you’ve experienced the same frustration. It only seems to happen in late afternoon or just around when I leave work.
I agree re: the letting kids be kids, but I also think that can happen in pre-K, where they can socialize and have positive interaction with other kids (without having to be pushed to study the Talmud at 3 years old). On the other hand, I can see the point of why others should pay for pre-K when there are other programs falling by the wayside. It’s a tough call. But one thing I notice for sure is the crazy micro-management and over-scheduling by parents these days that feel their brood should be master violinists and sports stars by the age of 5. In my day *cringe* we would play outside all day long and make up our own games, sports, puppet shows etc. until we were called inside for dinner. Kids need some time on their own to develop and express their creativity. I feel so strongly about that.
works for me- I meant to ask you- are you having a problem with posts taking forever now to show up, and at night they don’t show up until the next day? Very aggravating for conversations.
And thanks-it’s something I really wonder about. I’ve always thought kids are brilliant and imaginative and their brains are developing so fast at that age – they’ve got no restrictions and I always thought that it must be so important to just let them be. Now, with all the “pre-structuring” we seem to be limiting their options before we teach and they learn how to make choices. On top of the disneyfication of the imagination are we killing the ability to make creative leaps later in life?
Oh, and congrats on the “home run” you were credited with!! Oddly, they cited your post time of “1:44” vs your “bxgrl” handle…
Yeah, I’m hearing crickets chirp and watching tumbleweeds past by. No guests since the JD comment above. Should we just keep our side thread going even after this topic gets lost from the front page and relegated to “click here for last weeks links”?
Biff- it’s so nice and quiet over here now- good place to hide out :-). Hmmm…. but you’re right- the pre-k thread’s a little lively, but still very interesting. I love threads like that.
Wow, bxgrl that school thread is a lively and uncharacteristically civil one, which is great given the importance of the topic. Your post was excellent. I particularly liked your reference to childless people contributing to the community which is what I was getting at in my response to 10:30 in that thread.
Despite this thread having long ago run it’s course, it shouldn’t be long before a guest tells us to “get a room”. Who cares and thanks for the pre-K comment!
Biff- that’s a great compliment- thank you. Read your posts on the pre-k thread- agreed with it too. (feel funny about commenting on it as I have no kids – ah, who knows? Maybe I’ll stroll over there anyway 🙂
Spiffy, that’s my brother’s name!
Btw, I know you’re not Judy Blume, because you would have typed “G-d”. See bxgrl, I pay attention to you. We’re all mishpuchah here, after all.
