Associated took over the two storefronts next door, the old Beso restaurant space and the late, lamented Donuts coffee shop, for its expansion. A new awning was being installed on the building yesterday morning.

Checked out the Babeland thread (damn, I hate when I miss a Babeland discussion). Not sure exactly which post you mean since there were a few witty ones. But I cannot believe nobody bit on 9:59’s “What is up everyone’s butt?” Are you kidding me? That was one of the best setup lines in the history of Brownstoner Babeland discussions!!! Damn, why did work have to get in my way that day?
Whoa, I just re-read my last post above and must apologize for the poorly written rambling. Clearly my strong feelings on the subject impaired my already questionable eloquence. Fortunately, this is a blog, it is not a basic grammar course and you seem to be benevolent (at least being patient enough to suffer this fool).
Not so warped to want to discuss Piaget. He’s a fascinating topic: student of Freud, dismissed religious arguments, came up with the stages of cognitive development and I seem to remember often wore those cool John Lennon glasses!
Ok, off to check out the Babeland comment…
🙂 works for me! I think we’ll be really really sick of it by November! So do you think that’s the real What signing in?
I have to check the school thread too. I’m trying to weasel in a mention of Jean Piaget and child psychology for fun! (Gee- how warped am I? child psychology and fun? Ah well, could be worse- can’t wait til they have a thread on pets in Brooklyn- and by the way someone on the sex toy thread posted a brilliantly funny put down of one of the obnoxious posts. If you haven’t seen it you should look- it was laugh out loud funny)
Don’t you mean I don’t suffer fools “lightly”? 🙂 Yes, I remember that crazy argument too…wow, I really am a bxgrl fan. I could probably put together your top 10 debates in the last week or so.
We’re totally on the same page. Bush and his cronies should be charged with war crimes. I despise him with a passion, but realize he likely has little to do with the foreign (or domestic) policy. Of course, this in no way absolves him of the horrible things that have happened throughout his administration. I was in disbelief he won the vote again in 2004. Whenever someone cites the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq (which absolutely a tragedy and I hope the remaining ones there all return safely) I ask that they also remember the 100,000 or so Iraqi civilians who have been murdered. I’ll spare you the tirade about the history of human rights abuses by the and international civilian deaths the U.S. has caused. Michael Moore summarized them well at a high level in Fahrenheit 911, which I would guess you’ve seen, but my heroes Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn do an exceptional job of detailing the atrocious past and present atrocities in so many articles and books.
Ok, bxgrl, this discussion is getting way too serious. I think we need to take a break from the politics, change the topic and get back to our fun-loving, sharp-tongued, witty selves…change of topic?
I can’t imagine why he would do that? You’ve never gone off like the What, but you don’t suffer fools gladly either (another argument I had with Mr. Legion- he likes to nitpick semantics). I thought he would do that to me too considering I shot off a few emails to him about stuff that was going on.
Totally agree re Bush. I keep wishing there was a way to charge him with total ineptitude and haul him and his buddies out of office. At least charge him with war crimes for what he’s done in Iraq- I think we’re responsible for the deaths of more Iraqi civilians than Hussein at this point.
Ahhh, ok, thanks for that. By the way, of course I don’t take pleasure in your frustration, as I seemed to have implied above, just meant it in a “misery loves company” kind of way and felt relieved that it wasn’t specific to me or my login (thought maybe Mr. B was blocking my IP Address a la The What).
That theory doesn’t sound so crazy. Perhaps people feel less in control than they did in the last couple of generations (due to reduced job security, skyrocketing housing costs, increased taxes, etc.) and need to find other ways to get some control back, even if it means exerting greater control over their kids. And the initial positive expectations with respect to technology (i.e., computers will make everyone’s lives easier and provide more leisure and less work) has resulted in the opposite effect, whereby people are forever handcuffed to their work through their phones and blackberries and end up having to be twice as productive as they were before.
I think it’s so tough to be a kid now and have such worry for them, especially considering the damage we’ve done to the environment, social security mess, deficit due to tragic spending on Iraq and other invasions, etc. Thanks to Bush and his cronies, the problems have been magnified exponentially.
Re: Homeland Security – yeah, people here have heard me rant on that too at times. That’s a whole ‘nother thread…
Forgot to tell you- Several other posters not only have the same problem, some of them can’t post at all now. The posts just don’t show up.
I have a crazy theory that somewhere along the way we got the idea that if we micromanage our lives we will live forever because we can control everything that happens to us.It’s this underlying fear of the unknown and the idea that if you control every minute you control the future. But what we get are kids with less creativity, lives with less joy, people with less individuality. It’s scary out here- no question. But when i look at kids today I worry so much that not only are they being funnelled into little pre-packaged lives, but those lives might be more like prisons. Everything seems to be more and more about punditry. the whole Homeland Security issue is based on that. Fear, control, micromanage. Just imho.
