Extended family had a small sugar cane plantation in the Philippines way back. Along with Cuba that part of Asia also a large player in the sugar market at the time. Dad’s family used to get sugar canes sent to them around the end of year holidays.
Not sure what happened to it. Reminded of this seeing lots of canes being unboxed at the Avenue U Chinatown this weekend.
dona, in fiction one of my fave writers of all genres is Oscar Hijuelos. He’s actually raised in my nabe (West Harlem/Morningside/Washington Heights) and writes in English, but all about the Cuban immigrant/NYC experience. I get a real weird sense of deja-vu when I read him.

yeah – apparently if you get a girl friend a landlord in a brownstone is allowed to raise your rent 33%
