  1. I got an email about a wedding I’m going to in January. The subject line was, “Visit our wedsite!”

I thought that was endearing and cute. I’d tried to set up the groom a few times and am very glad for him.

  2. “if i was ever too loud you’d probably come upstairs and put me in a sleeper hold and choke me out.”

Wait- I thought he was the kinder, gentler Lech? He’d just chloroform you and leave you on the street.

  3. Denton, that is the legacy of the colonial world of tropical commodity trading. The Brits were the big merchants between Europe, US and the tropical producers. All the “affairs” and events have a totally different feel than other commodities — all Brits in black tie with Latin American smooth operators, Asian traders, everybody looking cool and a handful of women dressed to the nines. I absolutely LOVE that world. They lay the machismo on with a trowel, but that is the kind of machismo that works FOR women!!! Anyway, that was why you had the Brit in charge in Florida. They USED to be in charge of everything, but things changed in sugar…..another story.

  4. “DH, a one-bedroom is opening up in by building, which you’re familiar with. Kids everywhere though. And you’re not supposed to smoke weed in the building, though the guy who lives there now does all the time.”

    haha, bi building? sexy!

i’m still cool where i’m at. i guess one annoying neighbor incident in 6 months isn’t bad. i would be scared to be your neighbor. if i was ever too loud you’d probably come upstairs and put me in a sleeper hold and choke me out.

  5. 1910, the Phillipines is still a significant sugar producer, in fact, this guy Lobo about whom this book is about, controlled huge interests in the Phillipines too. Puerto Rico as well, though Puerto Rico isn’t much of a producer now.

Denton, that would be great, I would LOVE to see that list.

  7. Back in the days of Gulf & Western, when they owned sugar interests in Fla and the DR, I used to visit the mills regularly. Probably around 1980-1982. They always had some little guy from Scotland or England running the mechanical end of things.
