Legion — what a nice facile bit of pseudo social science. A course in research methods would have done you good. You really think most of the anger in today’s electorate came from disgruntled children of the 60s who couldn’t find jobs in their chosen professions?
I don’t believe in useless degrees. Only useless people. I have friends with those sociology degrees and others deemed useless by some of you earning six figure salaries.
m4l, you’re really sounding like an Asian dad here 🙂
I’m till a believer in a traditional undergrad liberal arts education, ya know, the one that’s supposed to prepare you for anything from law to medicine to business (btw, da kid also went to LaGuardia HS). ALtho it seems a liberal arts ed is not as rigorous as it used to be.
In our case it seems to have worked, da kid has a nice job in finance (altho not in the mainstream of what the firm does) so it’s all good.
I think giving the kid the college education of her choice is the best thing you can do if you’re lucky enuf to be able to do like we were. Maybe cuz I didn’t have the opportunity myself and Mrs D busted her ass at night school for ten years to get hers.
denton — it is a caricature to think that social sciences are largely about diversity and stuff like that. Definitely lots of excesses and inanities at the elective fringes of academe, but the core social science disciplines are rigorous if properly taught.

But Dave, a lot of colleges don’t offer courses in Histology etc.
“They just have to understand that by age 25 they are expected to be able to support themselves in a meaningful way.”
