ishtar,
True, with today’s economy, it is important for parents to inform their college age kids about the job prospects for any given subject of study.
A very realistic assessment must be made of the person’s innate ability, drive and persistence.
If they are doing what they love, I suppose a degree in pottery making is fine. They just have to understand that by age 25 they are expected to be able to support themselves in a meaningful way.
[some hot coals for the fire]
I suspect a lot of the political divide in America today comes from the misguided notions of the 1960’s where everyone just studied whatever they felt was cool and then got angry when they couldn’t make a living at it.
Their anger turned into an anti-capitalist mentality, when in reality it might have had it’s origins in the permissiveness of Post war parents.
Snappy – Yes. A lot of med schools actually prefer you to have had some soft undergrad major so you can relate to people better. There used to be a Dr. Barchelon (sp?) at Columbia who started a literature seminar for all residents to get them to broaden their horizons.
Very difficult, Snappy. For one thing, there’s a committee in the Science Dept (made up of science teachers) who have to send recommendations out to the Med schools. They have to know the students.
You’re at a serious disadvantage if you haven’t taken Histology, Endocrinology, Embryology and a few others.
“i had a really really really hard time rapping in front of a giant class as one of the few white people in the class but somehow i pulled an A out of my ass. dorm life in that program was SO MUCH FUN. then september came and i was assigned to a total moonface dorm and was stuck on the floor that housed most of the freshman soccer team.”
rf, unless the boy has some amazing skills, voice, etc, he on his own if he’s thinking of parents paying for a 200k tuition bill. if we were rich, sure why not as long as the kid likes it. but no f’ing way am I working hard, saving big, etc. so the kid can blow it on a fluff major. I wont tell him he cant major in it but if he loves it that much, go take a loan. and if by some chance, kid is super good at that stuff, would consider paying off this loan then but aint promising to cover it in advance of seeing any killer performance warranting the big bill. 200k is a large nut – ie my ass will be working to 75+ to pay that shit off along with the mortgage on the fancy house wife wants.
i was able to get a significant amount of financial aid and scholship monies (and other pretty cool perks) but being in summer program at college before the fall semester started of freshman year. it was for students for low income families and one of the classes we had to take was speech improvement. there was nothing wrong with my speech but we were required to take it. for our final exam we had to rap a song without using slang, or sounding like, well for the most part like you came from a low income family. in that same class we had visiting lecturers who would explain to us the importance of not acting ghetto. im not kidding you, this is what a good part of the class was about. i had a really really really hard time rapping in front of a giant class as one of the few white people in the class but somehow i pulled an A out of my ass. dorm life in that program was SO MUCH FUN. then september came and i was assigned to a total moonface dorm and was stuck on the floor that housed most of the freshman soccer team.
Arkady, we did like you said re the souffles, ordered three different ones at the beginning. Da kid ordered the pike quennelles appetizer cuz I told her too. I had the Dover sole, cuz somewhere I read that’s their signature dish. Mrs. D had an amazing monkfish/lobster combo. Da kid had an off-menu fish special so we could order the same wine.

Is it possible to get into med school without majoring in biology/chemistry?
