bxgrl – Maybe the usage had changed by the time you were in school but for us it was definitely Canada & was inevitably coupled w/ “to the north” & words about natural resources – forests, hydropower, etc.
Biff you are right and I think Canada is just generally better quality of life than U.S. Problem is, for a country like ours, it’s hard to mimic Canadian healthcare system because population wise and economy wise, it’s a totally different beast. It’s like comparing a bee hive to an ant colony.
America is a land of opportunity and you will note quickly that not many Canadians emigrate here unless they get lucrative careers or go to well known colleges here. You probably wont see a Canadian immigrant here working as a waiter, construction worker or a grocery clerk while you will see plenty of Russians, Asians and immigrants from some other countries where quality of life is not as great as here.
Can the national healthcare system work in Luxembourg or Litchenstein? Hellz to the yeah and probably work great there because it’s much easier to approximate the population, give out subsidies where you have the biggest town consisting of maybe 5,000 people.
Like Legion said, healthcare system does need fixing and can be done in somewhat better ways for everyone without Nationalizing it. Will it help everyone all the time? NO, that’s just not possible. There are always going to be losers and winners, That’s life.
DIBS, I saw that on Nightly News last night. I wasn’t sure where Brian Williams was going when he started with, “I realize this is the dinner hour, but . . . “
Kens,
plenty of top notch MDs here don’t take insurance or only certain policies. Cash only. I think you will find that canadians are much better satisfied as a whole than US.
Thanks, DH. Truth be told, I voted a 3-way tie among you, me and lechacal (e.g., you & lechacal at Pete’s; you, lechacal & me at Brooklyn Inn; lechacal & me at Ratifico; you & me at “Weekend at Snappy’s”).
ANA Airlines(9202) has announced a promotional programme called “e-Flight†to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide expelled by its aircraft. As part of this programme it is
asking passengers to visit the lavatory before boarding. According to the CNN report of the story, “the airline estimates that if 50 per cent of passengers relieved themselves before boarding, it would reduce carbon dioxide by 42 tons a monthâ€. Not a lot of people know that.
Pete – Snort!
