“Yeah, there are the UNdeserving poor who make the news, and give charity a bad name, but there are a whole lot more who need every cent of aid this government and private sector give, and so so much more, just to exist.”
There seems to be some consensus of opinion in much of this country, not just here on this site, that there are vast amounts of poor people lazily partying hardy on our dime, while the rest of us work like dogs to allow them to do that. While being poor here is nothing like being poor in Haiti, it still is no bed or roses, or an all night kegger. People do starve here, I’m sorry, but they do. They also freeze to death, die of heat prostration, malnutrition, and from rat bites. They suffer from poor nutrition, die early from high blood pressure and diabetes and stroke, and have third world like birth mortality rates. They live in neighborhoods we zoom by in our cars so we don’t have to see them, and we ignore them on our streets. They live in mountain shacks without electricity, in rusting trailers and in sweltering shotgun shacks. They are wailing on tv when their children are shot going to the store, and are the criminals doing the perp walk for mugging 101 year old ladies. For all of the welfare cheese, subsidized housing, medicaid and afterschool programs we have, we don’t come anywhere near solving their problems or making their lives much better. We can’t seem to solve poverty.
In comparison, we, who are educated, come from comfortable backgrounds, or have risen on the strength of our resolve and determination, are here thinking that it’s a party getting all of those gobment freebies, well, think again. Yeah, there are the UNdeserving poor who make the news, and give charity a bad name, but there are a whole lot more who need every cent of aid this government and private sector give, and so so much more, just to exist. And existing ain’t no party for them.
I am NOT a Nancy Pelosi fan . . . [Ducks for cover] . . . but I just don’t see what’s in it for her (and she’s always paying careful attention to what’s in it for her) to stand by Rangel at this point. I used to like Charlie, and I’m the first to argue for innocent until proven guilty, but the near daily revelations of his improprieties are astounding. $1,100 undeclared dollars a night to rent his place in the Dominican Republic! A night?!

bxgrl, I never bitched about welfare queens, ever. You mistaking me for Rob. This is also why people have beef with you. I never engaged you in anything and here you are pointing fingers and telling me who I am going to complain about and not. Thanks for shoving words down my throat.
“By the way, you may want to take a look at some of the new reports coming out about health care reform before you condemn it out of hand. You say no one has to die, but actually many are.”

I am too busy working, making life for myself, my family, supporting (emotionally and physically, not monetarily) my aging parents and living in the land of opportunity than looking at healthcare reports. I am not much of a philosopher, writer or conversationalist. I know what I have to do to succeed in this country and I am too busy doing that. In Russia, even if you worked harder than anyone, didn’t mean that you went far.
I saw the latest on Charlie Rangel last night on CNN, which went on to say he still has the support of Nancy Pelosi. Why do you suppose she’s standing by him?

Worth repeating.

That’s my rant for the day.
