Barney’s Co-Op was confirmed for Atlantic Avenue this March, started construction in June, and now it’s here. The New York Post reports that the store (which is located at 194 Atlantic Avenue between Court and Clinton) has its official opening today, and the jury’s still out on how well the high-end retailer will fit into the neighborhood. A Carroll Gardens residents who approves of the arrival of stores like Barneys, Urban Outfitters, and Jonathan Adler said, “All of Atlantic Avenue used to be Middle Eastern restaurants. There didn’t used to be so many fun, interesting things around.” Another Brooklynite commented, “I can’t afford to even look.” UPDATE: Racked has a bunch of photos of the inside of the store here.

“We lived in that area for nine years, and talking about DoBro like it’s some kind of ghetto is just idiotic.”
She makes everything outside of Brooklyn Heights sound like a ghetto. I remember the post where Minard called all of Ft. Greene ghetto, in fact. So don’t listen to her.
I’m especially excited about the Keihls possibility myself. I hope they carry that stuff.
ms boerum: Barney’s sells Kiehl’s? This is dangerous knowledge.
I’m not a Barney’s “type,” but I will definitely check it out since it’s so close by.
I wouldn’t mind a Bed, Bath, and Beyond somewhere between this neighborhood and the Atlantic Terminal. They sell a wide range of home stuff, so I always end up going there for one thing and coming out with a half dozen things. Family often puts a BBB gift card in the Xmas stocking and most of the recent weddings I’ve gone to the couple has registered there. I usually go to the Chelsea one b/c it’s near my office, but it’d be nice to have another option. Wouldn’t want it to squeeze out Cook’s Companion, though; they’ve got a nice knowledgeable staff and I enjoy shopping there when I want nice kitchen stuff for myself or for a gift.
gem- talk to MM- we go to Gateway on local streets. Takes a bit longer, much more “scenic” – but we avoid the Belt.
“Too many folks in and around Downtown are poor, or house-poor, or house-and-private-school poor. Not a lot of discretionary income floating around other than in certain pockets of millionaires in Park Slope, the Heights, and Cobble Hill -and they are as likely to shop in the Hamptons or Aspen or Madison Avenue as anywhere else.”
Oh bull hooey. Downtown is surrounded by DUMBO/Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, and Fort Greene. It’s awash in disposable income, and that’s not even including the people with enough money to rent at the Brooklyner or buy at places like BelTel and the Toren.
We lived in that area for nine years, and talking about DoBro like it’s some kind of ghetto is just idiotic.
I would be thrilled if both Crate and Barrel and CB2 came to our area
I think they would do really well!
I don’t think BBB is expensive at all – not like you are shopping in the Bergdorf’s home dept – now that’s expensive!
Duckumu,
From my understanding Crate and Barrel (or CB2) are in talks for space in the general Atantic Avenue area.
And with all due respect, Minard you know a ton about architecture and Brooklyn Heights, but your assessment of the retail scene in this area is way off. You don’t think all these brand new condo towers sprouting up all over Downtown Brooklyn (with people paying $2,000 a month for a studio at the Avalon or 700K for a 2 bedroom at Toren) have money to shop and buy some $30 sheets at Bed Bath and Beyond?
That’s absurd. This area in Brooklyn has TONS of moderate income shoppers who do not in fact do most of their shopping in Aspen or on Madison Avenue.
“I think BB&B is too high-end for Downtown.”
BBB is high end?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
“Also since so many things at BBB are large and heavy, you need cabs or parking.”
um, there’s parking at Atlantic Center. Which would be the ideal location for BBB as 112 pointed out.
“Too many folks in and around Downtown are poor, or house-poor, or house-and-private-school poor. Not a lot of discretionary income floating around”
Um, excuse me Minard, but um have you noticed the residential towers that have risen on Flatbush. They’re not exactly public housing. KA-CHING….bring the ‘up-market’ stores to Downtown, believe me that area will be so different in 5 years.
I agree 11217
I find Urban Outfitters to have HORRIBLE made clothing that literally fits one thigh and really should be worn by tweens and no respectable woman should be wearing Urban Outfitters clothing past the age of 25 – case closed!
am excited by Co-op coming in
if anything bed bath and beyond is too low-market for this area (cobble hill, brooklyn heights). it’s the wal mart of houseware stores, exceeded as a claustrophobic mess of a store only by gracious home. yuck.
i think what would do well in this area, in terms of home stores, is a place like crate and barrel, which doesn’t require as much space and has a lot of good basics.
