Barney’s Co-Op was confirmed for Atlantic Avenue this March, started construction in June, and now it’s here. The New York Post reports that the store (which is located at 194 Atlantic Avenue between Court and Clinton) has its official opening today, and the jury’s still out on how well the high-end retailer will fit into the neighborhood. A Carroll Gardens residents who approves of the arrival of stores like Barneys, Urban Outfitters, and Jonathan Adler said, “All of Atlantic Avenue used to be Middle Eastern restaurants. There didn’t used to be so many fun, interesting things around.” Another Brooklynite commented, “I can’t afford to even look.” UPDATE: Racked has a bunch of photos of the inside of the store here.

“Someone, apparently, has the kind of money they can bathe in like Scrooge McDuck, unless the Barneys’ folks market research was done under the influence of crack.”
Women love shoes.
Love Middle Eastern restaurants (for one thing, we can actually afford to eat at them); have no earthly use for Barney’s. However, the opening of a retailer of $600 shoes would suggest that the reports of the economy’s demise are somewhat premature. Someone, apparently, has the kind of money they can bathe in like Scrooge McDuck, unless the Barneys’ folks market research was done under the influence of crack.
I think this is an awesome addition to the neighborhood. It brings attention to the neighborhood that benefits the other local boutiques. (See today’s New York Times) A good mix of both small designer boutiques and larger chains is good for everyone. Not everything that is large or expensive is all bad. There is room for both.
Minard, MM and I walked down Atlantic Ave. last night- I like a lot of what’s happening there but I still have to say, I liked it better when it was filled with great antique and “junque” shops. Atlantic Ave. used to be known for them- most of those are gone now-
I think this happens to neighborhoods that get a rep for being quirky, or artsy or interesting. Atlantic Ave. is much more upscale now than it was even 10 years ago. I watched it happen in Soho- I worked down there for years. Those little shops and businesses couldn’t afford the spiralling rents. Most of the artists were forced out as wealthier people bought up loft spaces because it was trendy.
Who buys stuff full price at Jonathan Adler? Wait for their warehouse sale – current stuff is like 75% off.

It’s like they took two people and said “Okay, you be the pro-gentrification person and you be the kind of person displaced by gentrification.”

I don’t think one can compare what is happening on Atlantic Avenue to what happened in SoHo. There are still many quirky shops on Atlantic. Lately they have been joined by new stores such as Trader Joe’s, Urban Outfitters, and now this Barneys store. I see this as a very positive trend. This is a new building, no one was evicted in order for this to go in. Trader Joe’s is in an old bank that closed and U.O. is where a furniture store used to be that sold high end funriture to no one. I never saw anyone go in and out of that store, it was called something like carriagehouse furniture.
What’s the next big upscale retail store for this area? I’m surprised there isn’t a GAP at Fulton St. But for Atlantic, how about a JCrew and/or Apple Store
