Barney’s Co-Op was confirmed for Atlantic Avenue this March, started construction in June, and now it’s here. The New York Post reports that the store (which is located at 194 Atlantic Avenue between Court and Clinton) has its official opening today, and the jury’s still out on how well the high-end retailer will fit into the neighborhood. A Carroll Gardens residents who approves of the arrival of stores like Barneys, Urban Outfitters, and Jonathan Adler said, “All of Atlantic Avenue used to be Middle Eastern restaurants. There didn’t used to be so many fun, interesting things around.” Another Brooklynite commented, “I can’t afford to even look.” UPDATE: Racked has a bunch of photos of the inside of the store here.

“Does Laytner’s have kitchen stuff?”
If so, you should tell DIBS immediately!
> Bed Bath & Beyond is also a little too up-market for Brooklyn
Quit while you’re behind.
Urban Outfitters is super cheap, and Barneys co-op is just moderately department store priced with some expensive-ish stuff. hardly out of reach for typical ny’ers. what a bunch of nonsense, that you can’t afford to look. just a quip for the paper.
Gem and Minard;
Apparently you haven’t been to the Gateway mall. It is a big-box mall, with lots of free parking, right off the Belt arkway. It is intended exactly for the folks that Minard mentions: folks in Brooklyn with cars who normally shop in the burbs. It has about 15 of the big-box retailers (Home Depot, BJ’s, BBB, Target, etc.).
It is a bit of suburbia brought to Brooklyn.
The fix is in. I’m sure Barney’s is getting something like 2 years free rent or something from the surrounding developers. Bit of a lame attempt at upscaling the neighborhood me thinks. How about they fill all of those zombie buildings they’ve recently built first?
I CAN imagine that others in other parts of Brooklyn, who don’t want to trek into Manhattan might stop by, but I don’t know that it’ll be enough support. I think that in less than 2 years a Walmart will come to that area. It’ll fit better with the current residents.
Minard – what do you mean BBB is too “Up market” for Brooklyn?
do you mean too expensive?
hmm I would think BBB would do well in a place like the Atlantic Center, no?
They do Expert. Not a huge selection and no pots and pans or appliances, but they do have some kitchen stuff.
For kitchen things, I go to Tarzian West Housewares store on 7th Avenue and 2nd Street. That place ROCKS! And I don’t find it more expensive than BB and Beyond.
There’s also a great kitchen store on Atlantic near Sahadi’s and while they have terrific stuff, it’s a tad expensive.
Minard;
I agree that BB would not do well if it is located on Atlantic or other commercial streets that cater mostly to the hometown crowd. However, I think one would do well in the Metrotech/Court area, for just the reasons you cite. Lots of workers with suits around there.
Bed Bath & Beyond is also a little too up-market for Brooklyn and there is one in Lower Manhattan with lots of public garages nearby and taxis on the streets.
Brooklyn is still a shlepper’s market. There are few cabs and most who own cars shop in the burbs. I know I do.
The Barney’s store is a huge gamble. I wish them well.
