Barney’s Co-Op was confirmed for Atlantic Avenue this March, started construction in June, and now it’s here. The New York Post reports that the store (which is located at 194 Atlantic Avenue between Court and Clinton) has its official opening today, and the jury’s still out on how well the high-end retailer will fit into the neighborhood. A Carroll Gardens residents who approves of the arrival of stores like Barneys, Urban Outfitters, and Jonathan Adler said, “All of Atlantic Avenue used to be Middle Eastern restaurants. There didn’t used to be so many fun, interesting things around.” Another Brooklynite commented, “I can’t afford to even look.” UPDATE: Racked has a bunch of photos of the inside of the store here.

  1. Most definitely, Cobble, though not in quite a while. I rember once riding the subway down town in a suit and undershirt. Went to the BB and bought a shirt. By noon you could barely see the creases and pin holes.

  2. “No to Buy Buy Baby.
    Yes to Babeland.

Actually, perhaps both side by side would work.
    They could complement each other.”

yes, because whips are so appropriate for little people.

  3. “Brooks Brothers would also do well on Atlantic, especially if they open early enough to sell shirts to the men who forgot to pick up their dry cleaning the night before.”

The voice of experience speaking, BD? : )

  4. Beth Bath and Beyond has a lot of low end crap for sale to go along with the pretty standard kitchen applicances (Kitchenaid mixer, etc.).

If that crap kitchen store in the far end of the Atlantic Mall lasted for all those years (not sure if it is still there), BB&B would print money in the area. No question.

Brooks Brothers would also do well on Atlantic, especially if they open early enough to sell shirts to the men who forgot to pick up their dry cleaning the night before.

  5. I’ll say it if nobody else will — I don’t care if some of the longtime antique shops get pushed out. Their prices are outrageous. HARDLY priced for people of modest incomes. Hilarious. You can buy a beautiful pair of shoes to last you a lifetime in Barneys Coop more cheaply than you can buy a foot stool to rest them on in those antique stores. It’s about time Brooklyn got some better large stores like this. For what people pay to buy a home in Brooklyn we shouldn’t have to always remain “schleppers”. I agree with Expert Textpert we need a Buy Buy Baby too. Bit crazy there isn’t one already.
