Barney’s Co-Op was confirmed for Atlantic Avenue this March, started construction in June, and now it’s here. The New York Post reports that the store (which is located at 194 Atlantic Avenue between Court and Clinton) has its official opening today, and the jury’s still out on how well the high-end retailer will fit into the neighborhood. A Carroll Gardens residents who approves of the arrival of stores like Barneys, Urban Outfitters, and Jonathan Adler said, “All of Atlantic Avenue used to be Middle Eastern restaurants. There didn’t used to be so many fun, interesting things around.” Another Brooklynite commented, “I can’t afford to even look.” UPDATE: Racked has a bunch of photos of the inside of the store here.

I wonder if Target got some kind of clause worked out with FCR about allowing a competitor like BB&B to come into the AY area.
We use BB&B for mostly patio/outdoor stuff and random small things and accents (table mats etc) because they have a good selection of those kinds of things.
Of course, we really were spending beyond our means by shopping there while we lived in DoBro and Boerum Hill. And, now that we’re living in disputed Prospect Heights/Crown Heights territory, I guess we really should be doing our shopping at the Salvation Army and the local dumpsters.
u guys crack me up

No one said anything about the bail bondsmen. I will miss their attractive and engaging storefronts.
As noted above, the Co-op is not the same as the regular Barney’s and while not a full department store, it’s getting there. As also noted above, this is a new building (former parking lot/mortgage office for Independence Savings, now Trader Joe’s), so no long-term businesses were displaced. Remember all the discussions about all the department stores on Fulton St.? It would be nice to see some of the activity here spill over to the sad Macy’s there (I miss A&S!); there have been some recent lease signings of other stores on Fulton St., so perhaps downtown will be reborn as a shopping destination (and Gage and Tollner revived – if only!).
Minard is a she?!?!?!
I’m with 11217 on BB&B – if you live in a neighborhood with a decent retail strip chances are there are 2 stores that will cover all your bed/bath/kitchen needs. It’s not like the prices at BB&B are a bargain anyways…

That would be the proverbial license to print money.
