Will somebody please put this listing out of its misery and buy it! The brownstone at 1418 Pacific Street in Crown Heights has been on the market for more than three years by our calculations. It was an Open House Pick in April 2007 when it was asking $999,999. The price now is down to $700,000, which has to be getting close to the market-clearing number given the amount of original architectural detail and the proximity to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. What’s it gonna take?

thanks 11217, but why did you start your long post about your negative experience there as i dont agree with rob’s generalization, yet you basically proved it.
too many haters and too much violence. sorry but 3/4’s of a million dollars to live in that kind environment? hells no.
*rob*
1) That house is MORE than 3 blocks from Albany houses.
2) If you look up crime stats for this area, the brownstone blocks surrounding Albany are surprising homocide free, with few muggings.
3) Do you, sluggits, have first hand knowledge of this stretch of Pacific being extremely dangerous?
I’m not agreeing with Rob’s generalizations, and I realize that this isn’t going to make me popular, but I think people need to be a little more realistic about where they live.
The stats on the precinct where this house lies show that there have been 10 murders so far in 2010. That’s a lot. Granted it’s better than the 70 in 1990, 30 in 1995 and 19 in 2001, but it’s still a lot. It’s especially a lot for a house asking this much money. In any other city, a house asking 3/4 of a million dollars would not show crime statistics similar to those of Crown Heights.
As M4L said though, there was just a murder in Park Slope recently and these things do happen everywhere. But it happens much more often in some places too, and it’s time to fess up to it and stop just throwing it under the rug, especially when talking about such high prices for homes.
Here’s the thing…and I realize that Crown Heights has GORGEOUS architecture and lots and lots of nice people (Montrose being one of them clearly) but I have never felt more uncomfortable in any neighborhood in NYC walking around (and that includes spending large quantities of time in Harlem about 7 years ago).
The amount of ignorant comments just thrown out for no reason whatsoever is a challenge when you’re just trying to enjoy yourself and take a walk. I’ve never experienced anything like it anywhere else in this city (Granted there are neighborhoods I have never been).
I know more than a handful of people who have moved to Crown Heights and broken their lease because they ended up feeling uncomfortable. My co-worker is one of them. I also know 2 people who have been attacked (both were gay) in Crown Heights. I think a lot of these things go unreported, but it’s important to keep aware of it.
I appreciate the neighborhood boosting (you know I’m all for it!) and there is no doubt gay men who love living in Crown Heights, but I could never. I’m not used to people saying things completely unprovoked to a total stranger. It’s really a horrible feeling, actually.

You are grossly over generalizing yet again.
not when it’s personal experience. sorry but that is my PERSONAL experience as have others. guess what? seriously, if you told me that you walked thru some redneck hillbilly town and experienced animosity i wouldnt dream of saying ah, that montrose, she’s just over generalizing. sorry, but it works both ways, and that neighborhood is overtly anti gay. i dont give a crap if that some gay people have bought in the neighborhood, that means nothing. maybe they are masochists.

Rob, someone got killed in park slope near you. don’t see you moving out of there. crap happens – even in premo Central Park Manhattan.
uh, but that wasnt a gay bashing. it was hoodrat on hoodrat crime. im talking about open hostility toward gay people here. sorry but that does not a nice neighborhood make in my opinion.
*rob*
Yeah, “sluggita”, they’re going to march right in front of the house and wait for the new homeowner to come out. Please. You’re just a troll.
Montrose, I have a huge amount of respect for you, for every reason there is, but for you to downplay the possible dangers/quality of life issues of moving 3 blocks away from the infamous Albany Houses is simply irresponsible. I’m sure you want decent homeowners to move into your ‘hood and raise the property values, but this is uncool. At least be realistic.
ishtar, people living on this block might not go near the pj’s, it’s the other way around!
Rob, I’ll have to inform the many gay people I know who not only rent, but have bought houses in Crown Heights, that they are in grave danger. For some reason, they love it here, and are quite happy.
I’m not saying sh*t hasn’t happened to people, of course it has. Gays have been bashed in just about every neighborhood. I don’t see anyone moving from Greenwich Village because of gay bashing, and God knows enough people have been attacked there over the years. You are grossly over generalizing yet again.
And I join M4L in calling you out. You’ve never been here, you’ve said so before, long ago.
