House of the Day: 179 Adelphi Street
$1,650,000 isn’t a very high price for a four-story house in Fort Greene, so we’re not particularly optimistic about what this four-family at 179 Adelphi Street must look like on the inside. (The lack of photos ain’t helping either.) The listing does cite the existence of original details though, so maybe it’s not so bad….

well, we can’t fault 1:41 for making the assumption that his situation is common, who among us hasn’t thought about grabbing that brass ring of opera management? sometimes it seems like every brownstone is getting snapped up by somebody in the opera industry.
that said, there’s got to be something amiss with this house. haven’t the been trying to sell brownstones around the corner for 2x this price? for the area this is, sadly, a pretty low price. my gf and i, in our destitute finance careers, will never be able to afford it.
oh the irony! somebody should write an opera about it …
“people need a distraction from the hardship”
Until the cumulative cost of the distractions adds to the hardship.
#1, 5% of households in NYC are at $390,00 or above. That means there are a lot of people, compared to the number of brownstones available, with the cash to buy them.
Just an FYI…my parents just bought one of the newly built Ritz Carlton residences (condo) in Baltimore and paid about this much.
Prices like this are not a NYC phenomenon.
2.01- Typically during recessions and depression [hopefully not] the entertainment industry fairs well as people need a distraction from the hardship. Granted, a movie doesn’t cost a dime anymore.
2:10, I bought a pretty modest place around Lincoln Center about 6 years ago…I think I paid something like 235K for it…my memory is shot. We sold it for about 4 times that last year and moved to Brooklyn. As I said…we are lucky.
“How is working for a record label working in the arts?”
Sarcasm, I hope. Can’t be serious. Apology not accepted.
C’mon, 2:06. Even 2:08 alluded to the difficulty of the industry. Lil’ Wayne can’t shore up the whole enchilada. Anybody can download for free.
Ahh yes 2:07, he is so worried about bragging that he posted as guest.
He wasn’t bragging, he was pointing out what a joke it is that people constantly complain about prices on here. NYC attracts smart/talented/successful people from all around the world. Those sort of people make a lot of money at their jobs. If you want to be in competition for housing with average joes you have to live somewhere else. In NYC you are in competition with the best and the brightest.
2:07 # 1, I’m sorry to offend you. I realize that the way I said that might have been too off the cuff. I guess I made mention of it partially to dispell the rumor on here that I always hear that the only people who buy these homes are in Finance, and also perhaps as a way to inspire people to realize that you CAN do what you love and make a healthy salary. Many, many of our friends are in the same boat as us, but sure…I see how hard it is for some of my employees trying to make it on a fraction of what we bring home. Or worse…the hardworking folks in this city who struggle to make it on pennies.
I apologize for making it sound like we don’t realize how lucky we are. I know it’s not the norm, but we also have worked very hard to get to where we are.
