Condo of the Day: Montauk Club Mega-Spread
Wow. Could this 4,000-square-foot spread at The Montauk Club be the coolest apartment in all of Brooklyn? If it had outdoor space it would be a lay-up. As is, though, the entire floor of the historic club is pretty darn impressive, with its 45-foot-long ballroom and original leaded glass windows, mahogany wainscotting and inlaid mosaic tiles. Crazy. This time, the listing’s claim that this is a “once in a lifetime offering” isn’t B.S.

The furniture is ugly and doesn’t go with the aesthetics of the place is what my point was pop. They could have at least cleaned up before they took the pics as well. Nitpicking maybe but I still believe it’d look better empty.
In the inside this apt seems to be really special, and the building is simply gorgeous – I love to show it to all my out-of-town friends.
However, the inside of the common areas were relatively recently “updated” without any concern for aesthetics. I’ve gone into the building via both the ‘private’ apartment entrance (to look at another unit that was for sale) and through the club entrance (main door) and in both cases I got the same feeling: the space was redesigned to fit new items (eg. elevators) without much concern for aesthetics.
Also at some point the club, which I think owned the building, was in such terrible financial stress that had to sell some of the space above (hence the apartments) and I wonder if they are financially in better shape now. Otherwise the upkeep of this wonderful building may fall into the laps of the apartment owners, not an appealing prospect.
Not for me then.. but I am still happy to see it everyday on my way to and back from work.
I don’t know if I qualify as a prepster. But I’m 31 and live in Park Slope, so I probably do. 😛
daveinbedstuy: normally i’d just think and not even bother to say “to each his own” but WTFAYTA? the aesthetic of this place, inside and out is crazy beautiful…. “It’s (sic) show better empty!!!!” me think it show great like this.
I’ve seen some of the “30 something prepsters” you speak of.
Some look QUITE handsome.
I wanna join and maybe find myself a husband. Although I do prefer the scruffy/nerdy/artsy type, this could work in a pinch…
the club got a complete management overhaul last year or so.
now it’s being run by a bunch of 30-something prepsters and they gear it towards an increasing membership base of ……30-something prepsters. (explains why the dues are reasonable). i hear there is a deec single scene in there. maybe i will go check it out.
The current owners and their decorating tastes are doing a huge disservice to this place. Along the idea of an owner just being a “caretaker in the life” of an historic property, these people clearly do not understand that. It’s show better empty!!!!
