An hour before Simon & Alex’s house renovation was unveiled on last night’s new episode of The Real Housewives on New York, we stopped by their Cobble Hill house for a guided tour. The reality show couple livea in the lower duplex (plus renovated cellar) with their two kids and have two rentals upstairs. Enjoy the pics! Update: As a commenter points out, how funny was that to see Marty in the background of their housewarming party on the show last night!
I think it was the late Mrs. Astor, Brooke Astor, who made red rooms popular. She had a red dining room or library, I forget, it was written up several times. She and other society types would spend hundreds of thousands for hand-rubbed painted walls. Exquisite, beyond the means of mere mortals, hence the chic.
Why are people surprised or appalled at the social climbing couple in Cobble Hill? I have never watched the show, but snobbishness and social climbing is NYC’s official sport.
ringo- you’re so right! I love red rooms (not these red rooms however) but finding the right red can make you seriously bonkers. My kitchen is a wonderful brickish red- but i find that it doesn’t have enough punch to it because its a middle room without much light si I’m now making myseldf insane looking at other reds.
fsrq- since according to everyone who has met them they are sweet and nice, the fact that they are on the show hardly condemns to the deepest circle of hell. They aren’t out there killing cats or babies- they’re just all too human. Like the rest of us.
Nokilissa – its not “anyone” who brags or shows off- its people whose existence is defined by bragging and showing off. And sorry but maybe you have not thought about the psychology that is the root cause of our current economic crisis – but the people in this show are perfect examples of that psychological condition.
The show has been around for a number of years – anyone who watched it (or even heard about it) and the CHOOSES to be on it is either severely damaged or just a narcissistic pig…or both.
Greed, arrogance, narcissism, etc…yes the people on the show are “open”, and now I can plainly see that they are despicable human beings…entertaining (in a douche chill way) but still despicable.
A few unrelated things:
1. reds are hard to get right imo. I once had a red dining room and went thru 4 paint jobs. I don’t think the reds here are right, but I’ve been there.
2. I’m not 100% sure why they’re opening themselves even MORE by asking neighborhood bloggers over. I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw this listed for sale sometime soon. Not sure why I think this, altho I’ve always wondered how it is they have so much money to spend on fluff (I secretly think they can’t afford this habit).
3. I was told my a somewhat reliable source that they owned only the bottom two floors. That they bought the building, but sold off the top two floors. Wonder if this is true. I’m more interested in how they condo-ized the place than the renovation.
“conflict and nuttiness”
Smokey, dear, but the producers can’t ‘create’ the nuttiness, it has to be there to start with. And it is…in spades with these two. THey may play it up, but the words are spoken by the people.
Wow, fsrg, billyboomer, something dead floating in your coffees this morning?
There are plenty of things “wrong with our society” that have nothing to do with exaggerating accomplishments or showing off wealth. And to believe that any one who brags or shows off, (even in mildly amusing and endearingly honest and open ways that I’ve always found Alex and Simon to do) is HORRIBLE, is naive and judgmental to the extreme.
They expose their vulnerabilities and insecurities more than most, but their struggles are no more horrid than most couples’ struggles. Just different. And fwiw, I found them to be by far the most sympathetic people on the show last year as well as this year. I couldn’t fully understand the bashing beyond some sense of collective cringing at their openness. Which is what I most appreciate.
I think they are fascinating, flawed, open to a fault about their social interests and insecurities, loving parents doing their best, and seem willing to be honest about the importance of perceptions and judgments.
There. I said it.
I am glad hear that they are nicer and more sane in person, but really, even with the editing playing up their more excessive nuttiness, they are serious social climbers. At least they stick up for Brooklyn.
They’re definitely eating up the attention, invites, and freebies. It’s funny how they invite local bloggers around to get even more publicity. (Pics also over at Cobble Hill Blog.) Hard to believe they’re not really, really pretentious. At least they’ve calmed down with the “En Francais! En Francais!” stuff.
Red walls, red & black furniture, it just reminds me of my first apartment in 1972. All that’s missing is a stucco wall.
Sorry but I expected something a little more stylish. But to each his own, I wish them many happy days there.
Oh please these people are LOONS – you have to act like an ass in order to have something showing you acting like an ass. The show isnt a newspaper article where you can take a single quote out of context – they have whole conversations of them acting like fools (all of them btw) – and before someone tells me that everyone acts stupid sometimes – let me say – They choose to be on the show. TWICE!
Bragging and showing off (as well as exaggerating your accomplishments and wealth) is DISGUSTING and CLASS-LESS ALWAYS….doing so on TV is beyond pathetic and frankly is EXACTLY what is wrong with our society – it might make for interesting television, but you can never convince me (or anyone else with any character or class) that these people arent horrible…because they are.
