An hour before Simon & Alex’s house renovation was unveiled on last night’s new episode of The Real Housewives on New York, we stopped by their Cobble Hill house for a guided tour. The reality show couple livea in the lower duplex (plus renovated cellar) with their two kids and have two rentals upstairs. Enjoy the pics! Update: As a commenter points out, how funny was that to see Marty in the background of their housewarming party on the show last night!
Godwin’s Law alert at 1:18pm.
Mr. B, please post a link to Simon’s page once the before and after pics are done. It will be nice to see the whole reno and maybe the colors are not reflected as well as they would have liked them to be on the pics above.
Reds are very difficult to get them the way you want them. Additionally they usually require 4-5 coats for true depth. I did a dining room in Chicago in Commanche red (yes, it was in the 80s and probably not a politically correct name) and I loved it
god everyone has their panties in a bunch today. Happy hump day!
The hostility I guess is based on an upbringing that emphasized achievement, egalitarianism and modesty over bragging, classism and conspicuous displays of wealth (or fake wealth).
But you people are all correct, I am being too harsh – I am going to save my outrage for the PS stroller set, the bad architects, the horrible landlords that want to charge the market price, poor immigrant franchisees who bring tacky chain stores into our neighborhoods – and of course anything associated with RE development (beyond “affordable housing”)
I’m trying to figure out which of the many, many “best” aspects of my own life, which of my charitable and unselfish and beautiful acts, would make it onto a reality show… There are just so, so many to pick from!
I think the reno is a little dark (that could be the lighting in the pictures) and busy. It’s hard for me to imagine what things like the light fixtures look like in real life. Sometimes I wonder if I could pull of chandeliers in my apartment, and I tend to think not. I need more (lighter) photos to really judge.
Anyway, it’s pretty obviously what they wanted, and it does show a lot of personality. I hope their kids like it too. I don’t think it’s my taste, but that’s okay with me. (And it’s much closer to my taste than Jill’s reno is.)
fsrq–perhaps you are putting a bit too much stock in the cultural relevance of “reality” TV.
Simon and Alex made the house that suited them and I congratulate them on that. And by being communicative to us here about what their experiences are on the show they make themselves more human and certainly more sympathetic.
fsrq – I am not going to get in to a back & forth as this is a Brooklyn Real Estate blog and is not the forum for it. Additionally to do so via the written word is also not the best way to communicate.
You are certainly entitled to your own opinions based on the show as I am mine.
If you see us at a future Brownstoner gathering (Alex & I attended the last one) I am certainly prepared to discuss it with you in person.
best
Simon van Kempen
fsrg- why the hostility? Your comments are unnecessarily rude/aggressive….
