Trees in Park Slope

Does anyone know what the purpose is of the wooden frames that have been built around the trees up and down the streets of Park Slope? They appeared at some point during the winter, but I still have no idea what they are for. I assumed they were only temporary and maybe to protect them against plows, but apparently, that’s not the case.
