Carpenter Bees

I once had cedar used on my deck and then the carpenter bees came. I changed to treated wood and that was the end of the problem. The bees do try to return but never bore. I wonder if the toxins in your the treated wood are just too weak at this point. Maybe change the wood to a better grade of treated wood, just a suggestion.

Hi, I have some carpenter bees who have made a home on my deck. Not sure how to get rid of them successfully. The wood is treated wood. Any help? Thanks.

Do a search for a local beekeeper. They should be able to help you.

Not sure if he handles carpenter bees, but you can call Mickey, the owner of 3 sisters. He does swarm removals. beekeeper07090 (at) gmail (dot) com

We had carpenter bees in a neglected windowframe, and a tenant’s weathered table. They are not easy to get rid of. Their nesting tunnel is very different than a honeybee hive. You need to find an exterminator who is licensed and has experience using the necessary toxins. The PSU link has a good treatment description under “management.” The NCSU link is also informative. http://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/carpenter-bees http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/Urban/carpenterbees.htm

bee keepers only handle swarms as they are of value (when they are honeybees). carpenter bees do not swarm. they bore holes in wood and then live in those holes – in very small family units. when i was a teenager an old man on my street had a few of them boring into the wood trim on his house and he paid me to squirt oil into the holes – he told me that was the way to take care of them. I would not do such a thing now as I would think it might be a somewhat slow and cruel way to solve the problem.
