Why do plumbers still use expediters to file LAA permits instead of efiling.
Tradespeople don’t do one permit at a time. They use expeditiors to file, follow up, clear up questions, objections, etc for several jobs concurrently to keep them moving. They don’t have time to be going and waiting at the DOB for each issue so they hire people to do that and pass the costs to the client. Not to mention the paperwork involved. That’s business.

I was looking online at the process of say apply for a gas permit to change some pipes and got me thinking if this job is classified as a limited alternation then what is the reason to hire an expediter to file for a permit when the licensed professional could just do it online themselves at DOB website.
On DOB website states that the ” LAA/Permit Renewal Unit issues permits for repair work where the total cost does not exceed $25,000 per building in any 12-month period. These don’t require plans or PE/RA approval. ”
Surely something as simple as changing gas pipes to replace union for left right nipples doesn’t warrant a cost of $25,000.
Then why are plumbers still using expediters for jobs like this and as result of a middleman the homeowner cost to get work done increases.
Are plumbers that afraid of paperwork and or computers?

I do not want to sound rude, but can you re-read of what you are writing? If this is simple, then I do not know what is complicated.

Pardon my grammar, my point is why does a job that requires a pemit but does not exceed 25k and where no plans are needed to be submitted to DOB to get said permit warrant an expediter. Also why are plumbers not using the DOB’s efile services to obtain these permits for jobs like replacing unions on gas pipes with the proper attachments to make it code compliant instead of using an expediter or any any job that is classified as a Limted Alteration under 25k in cost. Do plumbers not know how to fill out paperwork? Using an expediter seems to being up the cost of the work on these routine jobs.

james… try calling other plumbers to find a cheaper price…complaining about the system is a pointless waste of time

no its not a waste of time. In fact prior to me posting this information on this message board the general public did not know that you did not need an expediter in order to get a permit for job classified as limited alteration an that plumber can actually apply for said permit online for $195 without an expediter.
If anything I have expose how crooked the plumbing profession can be in NYC and the questions should ask your plumber before you hire him and he tells that you that he or she needs an expediter to pull a permit
I am going to create website for homeowners to know what questions to ask plumbers before they hire them for a job. .
