The sewer pipe in front of my brownstone needs to be replaced. I do not have insurance. I have a few questions.
The bid from Harris was much higher than I expected, $28,000. I saw that someone had some work done by Harris in December for $21,000. Have costs gone up that much? I haven’t talked to Harris yet. I am going to have to get a second opinion, even if I am able to talk them down. I’m looking for advice on who else I might call for a second opinion, and how I might be able to bargain with Harris.

The other thing is, my dirt basement has become a sewer, really nasty. I need someone to clean it up when the work is done. Does anyone know who I would call, and what the cost might be?

There isn’t just one price for sewer work. The difference in cost has to do with several factors such as how far the building is from the City sewer and how deep the house connection is.

Yes shop it around until Steve loses his mind. But seriously, the price depends on the specifics on the job, which vary a lot depending on access, depth, obstacles, permits(protected streets for example) etc etc. However it also depends on how busy the contractor is. If a contractors getting a lot of calls, or half their guys just quit, they’re gonna quote you a higher price. I’d say in general prices are up.

FWIW I had Figliolia work on both my water main and sewer Lin a few t y ears apart with no problems. However that was 20+ years ago.

I would not work with Figliola

My one experience with them, albeit a while ago, was to get an estimate on a water or sewer replacement. An elderly gentleman drove up to my house in a Cadillac, rolled down his window, looked around, and gave me a price. He did not even get out of the car.

I have worked with Liberty on a water line replacement. While it was pricey (1.5″ line), they were reliable.

It is funny that you liked Liberty and not Figliola… seeing as how Alex Sr. literally taught Alex Jr.!
Site Work is all about the specifics like they said, but having multiple bids is the way you bargain. I hate to say that since it is my industry but that particular industry is small and a niche; they all know each other and the margins. They will drop to get the business.
That being said I do not condone that and promote contractors standing their ground!

Thanks, all. Figliolia came this morning and gave me the best bid so far, by a lot. They have done a number of buildings on my block. I assume that their work passes inspection – and the reason I say this is that American Water Resources refused to cover one of my neighbors if she used Figliolia, so she went with Harris. I can’t imagine the DEP refuses to certify Figliolia’s work, but I will check, of course.

We had our sewer line replaced by Figliolia (in 2009). Work done in two days. No issue with the City, nor would I have had any reason to expect that there would be.

You can google the figiolia plumbing – that might give you a clue as to why city might not certify lol. Look past the first couple results. It was a long time ago but I guess it’s a lifetime ban?

When AWR covered my water line they sent Liberty. I didn’t get a choice. The work was fine, I assume it’s the same for sewer replacement. I see Figliolia trucks all the time so they must be doing something right
