Carpeting suggestions needed!

I need to re-carpet the entryway and stairs in my two-family home. I am looking for a mid-century modern look, and I couldn’t find anything suitable at the Better Carpet Warehouse. Any suggestions for where else to look, or any particular style recommendations? The walls are a light gray – kind of boring, so I want some fairly vibrant carpeting, without going in the direction of garish.

Hair cord carpet is very hard-wearing (great for staircases) and has a real mid-century look. I believe Prestige Mills in Long Island City distributes Tretford hair cord in the US: 718-683-5051\. I’m also gonna guess that it goes by another name in the US and if you printed a photo and took it into ABC Carpet they’d recognize it.

I used a runner on the stairs and an oriental in the hallway. Good prices at rugman.com and a huge selection of sizes. Best for the stair runner was rugdepot.com Easy measuring and ordering.

One true mid century look would be something like “cut velvet,” that is medium pile wall to wall carpet, in a color such as rust. Or, depending on the room, vinyl flooring. Another idea, though it may be more modern: Low pile (industrial style) medium gray broadloom, with a few brightly colored Turkish, Moroccan, Afghan or Caucasian kilims scattered about. There are tons for sale online (try Etsy) claiming to be antique and hand woven and while they probably aren’t either they are very attractive and $130 to $350, including shipping. (I’ve bought two and am quite pleased.)
