Who is responsible for cleaning the carpet in a tenants' unit?

I rent out the upstairs of my house and the tenant has exclusive use of stairway which is carpeted.  Whose responsibility is it to clean this carpet -mine or the tenants’?

Landlord’s responsibility unless otherwise specified.  My garden level rental has a public hallway but the tenant use is about 99% and my use 1%.  I used to clean it but for the past 10 years, before lease signing, I specifiy cleaning it as the tenant’s responsibility.  No one has ever complained.

I would think that unless you specifically spelled it out in their lease then it’s your responsibility, like it normally is in most buildings.
