Security Cameras
Hi, we are planning on installing security cameras at our 4 story brownstone and I am looking for advice from anyone that have gone through this before. – Should we have wireless or wired system. – Should we have a system that tapes everything on a recorder in the cellar or deal with a company that would record the events offsite at their location. Anything else that we need to consider or look into before deciding on a system, would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t recommend using kit type or low budget cameras. You are MUCH better off getting professional high quality cameras that will last and provide years of high quality video. Get IP cameras that use PoE power (through the CAT5 cable). Then get decent internet service. It is your upload speed that’s important whether viewing from your phone or on a PC someplace or recording to the cloud. (at least 1 MB per camera) It doesn’t make sense to use wireless. You still need to run a cable for power. IP cameras run on PoE so there’s no extra power cable. Quality cameras especially outdoors have noise reduction, good low light resolution, IP66 rated enclosures, metal vandal resistant housings, autoiris lenses, back light compensation and more. In addition, the better cameras don’t use quick and easy setups that weaken network security like UPnP. Lastly, the better cameras will allow dual recording. An SD card in the camera and a NAS or computer locally along with cloud video storage. There are hosted systems that will integrate your alarm with video (or a card access system) at no additional fee. Try Bric security in Port Washington. There are a few good firms, this is their specialty.

Wired. Always wired. With these old brick buildings, even the best wireless systems are spotty. Your wired options are twin-cable (coax and power) or the newer POE (power over ethernet) standards. POE kits tend to be a little more proprietary but lower in cost. Twin cable CCTV has more variety, but can also be more complicated. A custom computer running POE cameras is the best for management, is the most robust , and with the most options, but isn’t as set it and forget it as standalone kits. re: onsite vs offsite – why not both? I personally like having a physical hard drive i can reference if i needed to…but there are plenty of services that will let you also back up x number of hours to the cloud for temporary or permanent storage. Considerations: Cheap cameras aren’t good, and good cameras aren’t cheap (relatively speaking) – That said, inside cameras with consistent hallway lighting, for instance… the “kit” cameras (whats included with most out of the box systems) are fine. If you’re looking at day/night outdoor and/or motion detect – i would spring for better cameras in those locations.
