Hurrecane preparations?

I never saw a hurrecane. Now I hearing that it will hit Brooklyn on sunday. My firm is in full “contingency” preparation for the event. I guess this is something serious. The quesiton is: what steps should I take? anything in particular should be done to the rowhouse? do I need to stockpile on food/water/generators? Also I planned to see my family in upstate exactly on Sunday. Should I drive there during the event?   sorry for bunch of questions, but I grew up in the country where the cold is the only adverse element.

Most of NYC’s power lines are underground, so I’d be surprised if there were many power outages in NYC. That’s not the case in NYC’s surrounding suburbs, with their above ground power lines. I’ve lived in NYC since the 1940’s, mostly in Canarsie. I never heard evacuation mentioned when I lived there.  I remember hurricanes doing  most damage along the shoreline, with flooding confined to  those low lying areas. In most neighborhoods the streets were littered with leaves, some tree limbs and occasionally a downed tree. Mostly you just waited out winds and rain for the storm’s most intense12 or so hours. My biggest concern with this storm is how my Directv reception will holdup. A couple of scotch and waters will do fine, thank you.

Any high rise dwellers should fill their bathtubs with water so they can flush the toilets if the power goes out.  There won’t be pumps operating to pump water to the top of your building.

Also, if power goes out, gas pumps don’t work for refueling.   Stay home, do something memorable so you can tell people what you did during the ‘cane of ’11.

Be careful of downed power lines.  During the storm, stay inside, not only because of the trees, but the power lines.  they come down everywhere and they start arcing and catching fire.  they are frightening. Steve

Don’t drive or walk in a hurricane, I have been though about 30 of these growing up in Louisiana.  It all depends upon where it hits.  Stock up.  The worst one I went though was Andrew in Miami and we were out of power for 6 days.  Be prepared.

Don’t drive, trees will be down all over and you won’t get anywhere anyway. Water more of a threat than wind, protect your basement. Get a shopvac and a pump.

On a serious note, they say these things miss the city and tend to go out to the Island, which is where I am from.  We had Bell in 76 and Gloria in 85\.  I was in Wilmington, NC when Hugo stood us up for Charlston in 89. What people tend to do is what mopar says:  cover the big windows.  Batteries for the lights and radio, though here in the city, I am not so sure the power going out will be as much of an issue as it would be on LI where ALL of the wires are above ground (for both bell and gloria we had the power go out in excess of 4 days).  I have a generator here which may be overkill.  If I did not have the generator and, come Saturday, was really thinking that this thing was going to wreak havoc on the power here in the city, I might run out and spend $50 on dry ice to drop in my chest freezer and frig.  Still, might be over kill.  if we were out on the island, it would be a good thing to have a generator and/or dry ice as food starts to defrost after 24 hrs without power.    Steve

BobJohn, do not drive on Sunday. We were going out of town also and changed our plans. Have food, water, batteries, radio, candles, etc., on hand. Get any objects out of the yards. If the hurricane hits with full force, you ought to cover the windows on the exterior with plywood, but I know we are not doing this. Would not even know how. Don’t have plywood, don’t have a ladder, etc., etc., etc. Watch the weather report — the worst of it could bypass NYC.
