Last night it was Park Slope vs. Prime 6, as neighbors rallied at the CB6 meeting against the under-construction restaurant rumored to be a gentleman’s club. The owner of the spot, Akiva Ofshtein, came with his attorney to explain that Prime 6 will not be a gentleman’s club, rather a restaurant with a backyard, basement lounge and VIP room. He called the anonymous accusations and protest fliers passed around the neighborhood “cowardly.” What got Slopers really upset was the proposed closing time (11pm for backyard, 4am for the bar); the possibility of bottle service; the proposed occupancy of 230 people; and the suggestion this could be “the new home for the Brooklyn Nets.” (The “sultry young women” on the resaurant’s Myspace also got a shout out; the owner claims not to have seen the Myspace or main site.) As Hope Reichbach, who reps Steve Levin, said, “To have a restaurant for the Atlantic Yards crowd is different than to have a restaurant for this community.” Many complaints also arose from resident’s experiences with the uncleanliness of the construction site itself.

Despite the anger, Prime 6 has already been approved for a liquor license, not by CB6 but by the SLA. The board made a recommendation to start a dialog with the SLA and ask them to reconsider the license. The board also encouraged the owner of Prime Six to start a more constructive dialog with the community, although Slope residents accused the owner of being “a difficult person to deal with” and “disingenuous.” Only time will tell what’s in the future for Prime 6 in Park Slope….

  1. Well ya know, if you’re so concerned about the noise, maybe you shouldn’t be living right near Flatbush Avenue!!!

These people wouldn’t last 5 minutes in my neighborhood (which is what I love about my neighborhood). Do you know how many chicken bones I have to pull out of my dog’s mouth every day in Bed Stuy? Slipping on the ice, indeed.

Not sure why “this stadium is going to be the end of the Brooklyn renaissance”

I think its great for the area. It will bring jobs and it has the chance to be like a Wrigley Field, MSG and Fenway Park. To have an arena right in the middle of a city I think is going to be great for Brooklyn. Last time I checked that particular area is not the best looking corner in Brooklyn. It is going to clean that corner up and make it much more inviting. Obviously there are some drawbacks but I think the postives definitely out weight the negatives.

  3. The dog slipping on the ice comment is a bit much, but I understand where the home owner is coming from. The noise from the backyard on a weeknight, let alone the weekend, will be beyond annoying. If there are any kids on the block, say goodbye to a good night’s sleep.

  4. I really don’t see what the big deal is about this place. There are plenty of bars like 200 Fifth that don’t in the least bit interest me, but I’m not opposed to them being there. There’s plenty of room for everyone. Jeez…this is NYC folks…not some gated community in the suburbs. It’s sad to see that some New Yorkers really don’t even GET what makes this place special. It’s a little thing called being inclusive and letting people live their lives.

No one has been hurt, so chill the eff out!

  5. Grand Pa…….
First of all your missing the point on the dog booties. It has nothing to do with the snow it has to do with all the salt on the sidewalk getting into a dogs paw and burning them so bad that it could do damage. It doesnt “undermine” anything. Last time I check there is no salt in the middle of the woods for the wolves you are speaking of.

I dont see any racial bias its a new bar who is saying its going to be a club open till 4am with a backyard open till 11pm that is in the middle of peoples homes. So I understand where people are coming from but people also need to remember it is NYC and if you want complete quietness move to the country….

  6. i don’t think it will ruin the neighborhood, but i think the difference is that this place is going to be pretty huge, and seems geared toward young and/or immature overspenders (of all variety) showing off for their friends. that, to me, means a different and less innocuous kind of drunk.

  7. I dont love the idea, but how does what goes on inside this place ruin a neighborhood? People might get drunk, like in the rest of the PS bars? Sketchy people will come to the neighborhood, like already happens with plenty of other joints here? Or is this a morality police thing? I honestly dont know the impact of a gents club on neighborhoods. Manhattan has some and its doing ok.

  8. name we one stadium in America that isn’t surrounded by a bunch of “Prime 6’s?” all attempts to stop this are futile and will end in the same way as the efforts to stop AY in the first place…let’s get on with reality people…this stadium is going to be the end of the Brooklyn renaissance…
