Last night it was Park Slope vs. Prime 6, as neighbors rallied at the CB6 meeting against the under-construction restaurant rumored to be a gentleman’s club. The owner of the spot, Akiva Ofshtein, came with his attorney to explain that Prime 6 will not be a gentleman’s club, rather a restaurant with a backyard, basement lounge and VIP room. He called the anonymous accusations and protest fliers passed around the neighborhood “cowardly.” What got Slopers really upset was the proposed closing time (11pm for backyard, 4am for the bar); the possibility of bottle service; the proposed occupancy of 230 people; and the suggestion this could be “the new home for the Brooklyn Nets.” (The “sultry young women” on the resaurant’s Myspace also got a shout out; the owner claims not to have seen the Myspace or main site.) As Hope Reichbach, who reps Steve Levin, said, “To have a restaurant for the Atlantic Yards crowd is different than to have a restaurant for this community.” Many complaints also arose from resident’s experiences with the uncleanliness of the construction site itself.

Despite the anger, Prime 6 has already been approved for a liquor license, not by CB6 but by the SLA. The board made a recommendation to start a dialog with the SLA and ask them to reconsider the license. The board also encouraged the owner of Prime Six to start a more constructive dialog with the community, although Slope residents accused the owner of being “a difficult person to deal with” and “disingenuous.” Only time will tell what’s in the future for Prime 6 in Park Slope….

  1. let’s see, perhaps the people whose property abuts the open area of Flatbush Farms protested the opening. Just because it didn’t get coverage here didn’t mean it didn’t happen.

The people who are protesting the hours of Prime 6 and the actions of its owner have property that abuts and/or is adjacent to the open area of Prime 6. Duh.

We, and you, have no idea what the clientele of Prime 6 will be. In fact, we really have no idea what kind of establishment this place will be, since most of the stuff floating around are rumors and the owner is shady and not forthcoming with details.

  2. Hey tiptoe, the guy said the patio would only be open till 11 pm. I would argue that that’s a reasonable hour for any neighborhood, especially a bar on Flatbush avenue. Yet the woman on the clip is demanding that the owner put some sort of system in place so that her future noise complaints can be immediately addressed. What does that mean? Perhaps a tin-can-telephone running directly from her bedroom window to the manager’s office? Sorry people but your proximity to Flatbush avenue was already priced into your brownstone. Save up for a couple more years and maybe you can move to the warm cocoon of Polhemus place.

  3. If you wanted peace and quiet, you wouldn’t have moved to Flatbush Avenue, 1 block away from one of the most heavily trafficked corners in all of Brooklyn.

And it’s not the owner who is racist, it’s the people who have a problem with this place open till 4am and not all the other bars in the neighborhood (and city) which are open till 4am.

Why is it okay that a white yuppie place like Flatbush Farm and their bar across the street isn’t on the list by the uptight slopers? That place has outdoor space and is open late too. Come on, what’s the difference?

It seems it’s the expected clientele which is the REAL reason people are pissed. If this place was called Moonface Diner no one would give a flying eff.

  4. “Really? Because Excelsior on 5th Avenue has a garden which is open till around the same time. So does Bar Reis. So does Patio Lounge. So does Commonwealth. Do does Mission Dolores.”

Confirms my suspicions that I moved to the wrong neighbourhood when I moved to Brooklyn Heights.

  5. You guys are not understand the real reason behind the rants…

the owner, who is WHITE (there goes your racist assumptions), has been operating underhandedly, obtaining 3 liquor licenses for this location in no time flat. How? Because they never notified Community Board 6 about their pending applications. Hiring construction crews who do shoddy work of maintaining the location, leaving dumpsters parked right in front of garages that are used daily…the list goes on and on. And yes, a nightclub with outdoor space that is open until 4 a.m. is problem, whether you are in Bed Stuy or Park Slope or the Upper West Side. The fact of the matter is that a majority of the people who are complaining do not live on Flatbush and have a right to make sure they can have some peace and quiet well before 4 a.m.

  6. “The noise from the backyard on a weeknight, let alone the weekend, will be beyond annoying. If there are any kids on the block, say goodbye to a good night’s sleep.”

Really? Because Excelsior on 5th Avenue has a garden which is open till around the same time. So does Bar Reis. So does Patio Lounge. So does Commonwealth. Do does Mission Dolores.

Yet for SOME reason people have decided to pick out this place as being the culprit because their facebook page has brown faces instead of white as its friends. Hmmmmmm….
