Brooklyn burger lovers rejoice: Shake Shack has finally decided to shack up in our borough. The Daily News reported yesterday the popular burger and shake joint will be in the Fulton Mall next year. While it would have been cool to see them in the old Gage and Tollner spot, the restaurant will be moving into Tony’s Famous Pizza at the corner of Fulton and Adams, right outside of the Jay Street subway. Seems like a fail-proof location to us. Shake Shack is just the latest of new arrivals to the Fulton Mall; Filene’s, SYMS, H&M and Aeropostal are also on the roster. Think Fulton Mall could be Brooklyn’s next destination spot?

  1. I live a few blocks away and I think this is great for Brooklyn. I’d much rather see locally owned (or at least Five Boroughs Owned) businesses then the big box retail. Ideally, we’ll end up with all sorts of businesses that cater to the ever-evolving and diverse population of the surrounding neighborhoods.

As for the lines, previous posters have it right – go early or late. Or just don’t go. That’s been my philosophy with Mile End and it’s been a deliciously fattening stragety.

  2. Fulton Mall will get more yuppie chain stores and food places, if yuppie chain stores and food places can pay more rent then the current stores that cater to a less affluent, less white clientele…if they cant then the Mall’s retail mix will mostly stay the same.
It is really pretty simple, none of us have any say in it, it is simply a matter of economics.

As for Shake Shack – I am sure they can pay more rent than the run-down pizzeria (which btw was good about 20yrs ago when it opened) and is probably good for the boro to have a Danny Meyer restaurant greeting Manhattan visitors rather than again – a run down shop.

  3. I haven’t eaten beef since ’92, so I don’t get all the fuss over a piece of barely digestable, hard to pass cow patties. But,this is good for Brooklyn and Fulton Mall is a destination…even for people from other cities.

  4. In agreement with Mopar on the salad thing (and most other things it seems). Goodburger has a great salad, which I get fairly often. But this leads to drooling over the shakes while I’m standing in line. I used to go to Kati Roll when I worked near Times Square and always wished there were some way to get a side salad with that greasy meat log.

Don’t forget Macy’s at the Fulton Street Mall–very convenient if you don’t want to trek all the way to Manhattan.
