  1. “assholes kids really have “ADD” or “ADHD” and get a bunch of pills to mellow them out when good old fashioned parenting would probably do a whole lot more good.”

spoken like a true non-parent. i don’t believe in pills, but for some kids, old school discipline is not the key. You have to re-wire their brains while their brains are still elastic. its tricky stuff.

  2. I am younger than you folks and I never heard about Autism or ADD growing up in Russia. Only learned about these things when I got into high school.

My sis said those kids existed in the 70s and 80s as well but there was no special ed classes per se and parents were so embarrassed of them that they basically just kept them locked up at home. If you had high functioning autism then you would just be called stupid and mocked by kids and insignificant enough to remember.

  3. “I know the ethical standards are quite high in this jurisdiction.”

You mean in the OT? Do we have to take OT CLE in order to maintain our licenses to practice OT law? Are you admitted to practice before the OT Supreme Court? Do you believe the cozy relationship between the OT executive and legislative branches violates the OT constitution? And I forget, is the death penalty constitutional here?

  4. when I was a kid, children with autism where referred to as “mentally retarded”. Often families sent them away and they were seldom seen.
There were always autistic children and children with mild autism. The latter were just considered odd ducks.
I don’t think there are any more or less autistic children today. It is possible that in the old days, people tended to mind their own business and not talk about their children’s ailments to people outside the family giving the impression that it is a new phenomenon.

  5. My sister had petite mal when we were little. The doctors put her on barbituates every day for years- until we were in our late teens. The only effect she seems to have today is she has very few childhood memories. But we don’t know if that was because of the epilepsy or the medication.

Autism may not have been recognized back then.Probably we would have thought the kid was antisocial, or “weird.” But they do say the rate of autism has risen drastically.

  6. “DH, so Smorgasburg was fun? i heard its weird becuase you basically spend all day waiting on line. once it is 90 degrees and sunny out, that may not be a fun prospect. nothing like a 3pm lobster roll that has been out in the sun for 6 hours. f’ing gross.”

yeah – it wasn’t bad. i popped in early to grab breakfast and then popped in right before closing. i would imagine the lines around 1pm were insane though. just from my quick stroll around it seemed like most of the popular vendors were all clustered together.

wasn’t too crazy about the stuff i ate though.

  7. lechacal,
    That was an amazing demonstration.
He actually levitated the “woman” ha ha.
Are you trying to build something similar?
    His set-up does seem feasble.

    slope4eva,
Yes, kids can be ruthless. To be fair though, Slate gave as good as he got. I can recall the older kids having respect for his Right jab.
…and looking back, it seems that no kid escaped the cruelty of the crowd in one way or another. Most of us were left to our own devices for the entire day so there was an equilibrium established after a while amongst the wolf pack, boys and girls alike.
