  1. Last week I went to a facility near Ottawa, Canada that is the testing grounds for intrusion detection systems on perimter fences that protect high-security plants (think nuclear power plants, military installations, tense borders, etc.). The company in Canada is owned by an Israeli company. The Israelis have a high interest in this area, as you might imagine.

You would not believe how much engineering has gone into fences and intrusion detection. On this test site there must have 20 types of high-security fences, including the “cadillac” of such fences, developed by the Israelis and used along the border with the West Bank. They have their act together in this area.

I was there to discuss a fiber-optic intrusion detector system that my company is developing.

  2. Legion, it was a different time, back when spanking was the hippie alternative to beating your kid with a belt, which was pretty normal. Nowadays I think people call the cops if you spank your kid.

  3. Don’t forget, until Dr. Spock wrote his book (when? back in the 50’s) people treated their children very differently. He introduced so to speak, “hug the children”… what a concept for some people. Thank goodness my parents were/are very lovable and we could tell them what happened in school, but, I had friends who if they got in trouble in school, they also got in trouble from their parents no questions asked.

  4. that’s why I don’t teach kids younger than college-age. I’d throw chalk at them too. also, I don’t think you’re allowed to swear in front of HS kids, which pretty much disqualifies me.
