  1. I would still take Peace Corps over paralegal work. Navigating a third world country, even within the embrace of the Peace Corp program, forces you out of the bubble. If he’s that sheltered and directionless, he has to start somewhere.

  2. You know what he should do for a year? Be a roofer. Repair asphalt shingle roofs. Somewhere utterly undistinguished. Maybe in the south. Do that for a year and then look around and realize you have got to snap out of it and make things happen for yourself or you’ll spend the rest of your life getting high after work with the guys to put your brain to sleep so it doesn’t mind that your soul is dead. Fuck resume building. You know what? This guy is gonna wake up in 20 years and he’ll be making half a mil a year and his wife will be fucking the gardner and he’ll realize he can never go back and do it over.

  3. Slopey, he might actually do peace corps because it is an approved resume builder. That’s what all these kids are doing these days. Resume building. Unpaid internships, peace corps, whatever…. all to build a resume. The fuck happened to working at Dairy Queen for the summer???

This kid won’t learn what hunger is unless he finds himself in the middle of jerkwater nowhere surrounded by nobodies going nowhere and doing nothing for his resume. That’ll jerk him out of his middle class sleep.

  4. jackal,

I am perpetually bewildered at the hordes who think being a paralegal tells them something about being a lawyer and that those who do think that and become paralegals really do decide to go on and become a lawyer. I would never have become a lawyer if I had been a big law paralegal first. What a mindless way to spend your early 20s. Ugh!

My advice — send him to Africa or Indonesia in the Peace Corps and let him dig wells and build thatched roof schools for a year, or some similar endeavor. Anything to get him out of the bubble. Strip club may loosen him up and get him to fail the interview to buy time, but it will take more than a lap dance to undo all that sheltering.
