I believe bxgrl was referring to the Jewish courts, in the Orthodox and Hasidic communities, where matters of divorce and civil matters are often decided by a board of judges who base their judgements on the Torah, and Talmudic and traditional Jewish customs. Like obtaining a “get” for divorce, and things like that.

    They don’t always hold up in secular courts, especially if they are seen, from an outside societal and legal standpoint, to be grossly unfair in terms of how we judge these things in today’s society.

  2. Lech, I went to the Erie Canal on a little trip the summer before last and it was so cool.

    I went on a tour, through the locks and it was so peaceful and interesting. I never really understood how a lock worked — like an elevator on a river. I saw that they had those houseboats and you can go the whole way through the canal. Very low tech, sort of Huck Finn-ish, but without the unpredictability of the Mississippi. The day I went was clear and beautiful.
