If you are interested in the history of the ideas related to those issues, I would strongly recommend reading Isaiah Berlin’s work, if you haven’t already.
‘Two Concepts of Liberty’ is especially good. He was a very clear writer, who could express difficult ideas concisely and elegantly.

(and don’t worry, this is not a political comment / advert. Most of his best work is from the 1950’s and could be applied for or against aspects of both US parties currently)

“Legion, I never said any such thing, and really do not want to engage in an argument about this topic. It’s one you are incapable of having any rational thought on (Islam), and I really don’t want to go there, not to mention bore everyone else to tears going over points that have been said many times.

For the record, I am an infrequent church going, but believing Christian. You have absolutely no idea how I feel about my faith, or the faith of others, whatever that may or may not be. I don’t judge other people by who or how they worship, if they worship at all. I’m not going to vilify an entire believe system just to wave the flag.”

    MM,
I am perfectly capable of having a rational discussion of Islam as much as I am about Christianity.
It’s just this disconnect where some here in the US choose to willingly ignore the fact that radical Islam is currently at war with:
    Hindus in India
    Christians in Europe
    Bhuddists in Afghanistan
    Jews everywhere
    and
    even moderate Muslims.

Again, if you believe that Christians are overstepping their boundaries by their influence on American society, then surely you would object to radical islamists seeking to subjugate women here.

…and no, I do not purport to know what you are thinking or your faith. This matter is one of logic and fact.

  3. When we went to Birmingham we took the kids (ages 1, 3 and 4 at the time) to the Civil Rights Museum. WHOOPS. “Daddy why is that man hanging from that tree?” “Uhhhhh…..”

  4. My impression of Ashville is that it is a kind of arty mountain town, very pretty. There is great clay around there apparantly and I heard that they have lots of ceramic artist studios. It just seems like a great place. I’d love to go sometime.

  5. Legion- you keep insisting on putting words in my mouth and I am tired of it. I realize you think you’re being insightful and all that but you’re problem is you think in screaming headlines, not in facts. Kindly (again) erread MM and rf’s posts on how the Jewish community is allowed to use Hebraic law for some issues. Jewish courts can issue or deny a get (a Jewish divorce). But if one party of the other doesn’t like the decision, they go to a regular court of law which supercedes the Jewish court. SO how does this differ from a Muslim couple asking to have this issue deicded under sharia law- so long as it does not conflict with the law of the land?

I realize you’re fearful of us all coming under sharia law, but you need to wipe that white foam off your lips and get a grip.
