  1. bxgrl, I think those situations are sad and are unfortunately common across a multitude of cultures and situations.
I think that the law should protect people as much as reasonably possible, but in the end people have to make decisions for themselves.

I do not think the law should support contracts where people give up fundamental freedoms and rights.

  2. Legion, for crying out loud, get off it, will you? Let me make this plain:

    1. I was not even in the discussion. So how could I be “disconnecting” from what “radical muslims” are doing all around the world? I was NOT DISCUSSING THEM.

    2. Neither was Bxgrl.

    3. There are a lot of things going on in the world that I don’t like and don’t agree with. So what?

    4. I fail to see where my political leanings automatically define what I think about anything or anyone. I make my own decisions about who or what I support, and who or what I oppose. I don’t let a political party, or age, or race, or gender or brand of faith determine that blindly. All of those factor into my decisions, but in the end, they are MY decisions. I don’t appreciate you trying to tell me that I have a disconnect to the wrongs of the world because I lean left, which is exactly what you are doing.

    5. Neither bxgrl nor I ever said we supported any repressive aspects of Sharia Law. How you can extrapolate that from anything either of us said today, or any other time remains a mystery to us both.

  3. “As for politically correct- I base my views on a reading of all the issues, not the Glenn Beck version.”

    …ha ha,
and once again another poster believes that I’m getting my facts and arguments from Glenn Beck.
Once again, I’ll state that I neither listen to Glenn Beck, Subscribe to his newsletter (if he has one), nor do I watch his program on cable.

My ideas are simply based on observation, logic and the application of the Western tradition of Logic.
Attempting to discredit me by attaching me to someone you see as a “radical” right winger will not negate the strength of the argument. On the contrary, it will expose your argument’s weakness. :o(

  4. BHS- as am I. But the question becomes, if a woman agrees to this status because it is part of what she believes, then what? It’s like, if a woman stays in an abusive relationship, what can anyone do except offer her help, and try to stop the abuser. But unfortunately there is no law stopping her from going back to her abuser- sop the question becomes, should there be? Then of course we get into all the implications of such a law.

Same thing for women in any fundamentalist religion. Under US law, no matter that Jewish law can be referred to and used in certain situations, under US law, they have equal rights. The sad part is if they don’t choose to use that.

  5. “OK, just for the record I am against all teachings that seek to subjugate women or give them lesser status, and I am even more against any attempts to give those teachings any sort of legal status. ”

Scott – I am with you. Everyone seem to forget to look at those teaching in context in which they were given.
Similar to Etson’s early comments on the laws given to the Jews during their Exodus. Most of those law were about sanitation and survial.

  6. Birmingham was the BIG CITY where I was from (about an hour away by car from B’ham).

Now it would be sad to me, I fear. I remember the day I moved there. I was amazed at the skyline! I loved that I was moving to a place with skyscrapers!

  7. “I expect every religion to be subjected to a rigorous critiquing if they want to affect the laws of this country” at 5:15. I am assuming you do know how to read, legion?

As for politically correct- I base my views on a reading of all the issues, not the Glenn Beck version.

Thanks, etson- I will try to find that book. I wasn’t worried about it being an advert. Good ideas and thinking don’t play politics 🙂

  8. OK, just for the record I am against all teachings that seek to subjugate women or give them lesser status, and I am even more against any attempts to give those teachings any sort of legal status.

I don’t care what the reasoning or tradition behind the teaching is.
