sheesh g10, are you talking American pop music only? Many Asians in orchestra pit in all the leading orchestras, many well known and esteemed soloists out there…
Mitsuko Uchida probably one of the all time great Mozart interpreters, possibly my fave.
Kyung-Wha Chung considered a great violinist.
Anyway, how much ‘soul’ do you need playing Western Classical music? Too much and you are considered to be overly romantic.
no – what’s interesting is you only reference classical music above which the Chinese have on lock….at PERFECTING the delivery – I have not heard an original major movement of theirs on a grand scale yet – am not talking yo yo ma or Lang Lang and even Lang Lang am not so sure does original stuff…
and then YES would only be talking about contemporary music of let’s say the last 50 years or whatever…..
Mao was not a nice man, something discussed here, but it is correct that he stepped into a period of Chinese history when China was unprepared for the modern world, and was susceptible to foreign incursions (Japanese??? remember that?). The really interesting transitional time in China was the 80s when the world there began to morph from rigid (brutal) social repression and rigid communal ownership to individual incentives. I remember it in the cotton markets.
Oh, here I go falling into the OT lake. Gotta work. see ya.
Actually, England and France were more impressive in the extent of their geographic colonization. Italy is probably the best in the world of Art and Architecture.
“I have not heard an original major movement of theirs on a grand scale yet”
I’ll only step on a grand scale after an original major movement.
Even more importantly, Chows are from China.
Shout out to CDog!
Perhaps. But the Chinese invented meatballs.
I’ve never been to Italy. I know, shocking, right? It’s been on “the list” forever but it just keeps getting bumped down in favor of other things.
Case in point: We’re planning a spring vacation. My wife proposed Italy, I proposed Cartagena. And Cartagena it is.
off the top of my head, there’s more truly creative big musical acts in iceland than in the US (at least over the past 10 yrs or so)

I saw Mao in his tomb.
