  1. bobjohn, I would give the city a monumental fail for this snow removal operation.

The stupidest part of this is that this will probably be the most costly snow removal in NYC, if not, world, history. For example:

    1. Lost sales tax revenue due to snow bound post X-Mas shoppers

    2. Loss of business revenue due to inability to get to work, inability to make deliveries.

    3. Expensive post storm towing of vehicles including city buses that would have been unnecessary had the job been completed to begin with.

LAW OF UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES : Occurs when somebody in power decides to implement a plan based on their own expectation of how the world should work, without ever examining history or real world experience.

  2. I just can’t get on the blaming the city train.

It was a giant storm, lots of people were out and got stuck (sunday after xmas, more folks were probably in cars than would normally be), they’ve tried to clear major streets first, all seems fairly reasonable to me. Is it unfortunate? Could it have gone more smoothly? Sure, but it seems like that’s more a luck issue.

And as for what to do with the snow, I think they give it to the DEA, no?

  3. I never liked NYE. It always seemed to me to be fake happiness. And dominated by amateurs and drunks. I think NYE is by its nature sad. The end of the year, plenty of failures. Even if you had a great year, there is something about the relentless passage of time that makes a person feel blue. New Years Day is much better. It’s a new day, a new year and I like to have people over on New Years Day. It is much happier.

  4. “city buses should have had chains on the tires. if there’s one thing we shouldn’t be seeing abandoned on NYC streets, it’s buses without chains on the tires. ” – this is true.

  5. As usual, NYE I plan to be in bed by 11PM.

As usual, we will start with some cheese and stuff, and a bottle of (this year) Dom Ruinart 1993. Then we do a rib roast with a bottle of 1988 Haut Brion. Mrs D will bake dessert.
